Julien Duvivier

1896 - 1967

.
.
The director Julien Duvivier belongs to the big five French directors of the 20s and 30s beside Jacques Feyder, Marcel Carné, Rene Clair and Jean Renoir.

He began his career as an actor at the theater but a voice blockade as a result of stage fright brought him to look for another possibility to work artistically. So he joined the film business in 1918, first as an assistant of other directors.

Already one year later he realised his first movie as a director with "Haceldama ou Le pris du sang" (19).

He cemented his position as a director and screen writer in the next years and he realised silent movies like "La reincarnation de Serge Renaudier" (20), "Der unheimliche Gast" (22), "Coeurs faruches" (24), "L'abbé Constantin" (25), "Le mystère de la tour Eiffel" (27), "Le tourbillon de Paris" (28) and "Maman Colibri" (29).

With the sound film of the 30s Julien Duvivier became one of the most important French directors and he shot his greatest successes in the 30s and 40s.
To his popular works of those years belong "David Golder" (31), "Le petit roi" (33), "La bandera" (35), "Le golem" (36), "La belle équipe" (36), "Pépé le Moko" (37), "Un carnet de bal" (37) and "Marie Antoinette" (38).

The movie "Pépé le Moko" (37) made Jean Gabin a movie star and Julien Duvivier got an invitation to the USA where he realised the movie "The Great Waltz" (38) for MGM.

After his return to France he shot the movies "La fin du jour" (39) and "La charrette fant^me" (39) before he went back to the USA with the outbreak of World War II.
There he was able to direct other movies like "Tales of Manhattan" (42), "Flesh and Fantasy" (43) and "The Impostor" (44).

After the war he returned to France again and realised more movies, among them popular productions like "Anna Karenina" (48) - a British movie, "Sous le ciel de Paris" (51), "Don Camillo" (52), "Le retour de Don Camillo" (53), "Pot-Bouille" (57) and "Marie-Octobre" (59).

His last movies came in the 60s into being with "Das kunstseidene Mädchen" (60), "La chambre ardente" (62), "Le diable et les dix commandements" (62) and "Diaboliquement vôtre" (67).
Just after the completion of his last movie - which was about a man who suffered from amnesia after a car accident - Julien Duvivier became a victor of an automobile accident when his car collided with another car. The driver of the other car was the French minister for Scientic Research, Maurcie Schumann.

To Julien Duviviers preferred actors belonged Jean Gabin and Harry Baur.
