She made her film debut in 1916 with "Slander" (16), it followed the movie "His Own People" (17).

Already one year later she acted regularly in front of the camera, first for Vitagraph, than for Fox Film where she was the successor ot Theda Bara.
There she became popular very fast not least because of her film costumes which often showed more of her body than cloaked it. 

To her well-known movies of the 10's belong "Over the Top" (18), "The Little Runaway" (18), "The Green God" (18), "The King of Diamonds" (18), "Silent Strength" (19), "Dust of Desire" (19) and "The Man Who Won" (19).

The height of her career followed in the 20's and she took part in the productions "Nomads of the North" (20), "The Queen of Sheba" (21), "Disraeli" (21), "The Truth About Wives" (23), "Sinner or Saint" (23), "She" (25), "A Million Bid" (27), "Glorious Betsy" (28) and "Stolen Love" (28).

Her roles in movies became smaller with the rise of the talkies but increased in numbers. To her movies of the 30's belong "Lena Rivers" (32), "Only Yesterday" (33), "The Scarlet Letter" (34), "Anna Karenina" (35), "Rainbow on the River" (36), "Espionage" (37), "Conquest" (37) and "The Women" (39).

Although the 40's offered her again a lot of work and she acted in the movies "Misbehaving Husbands" (40), "Our Wife" (41), "Presenting Lily Mars" (43), "Charlie Chan in The Chinese Cat" (44), "Bud Abbott and Lou Costello in Hollywood" (45), "The Undercover Woman" (46), "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (46), "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (47), "Letter from an Unkown Woman" (48) as well as "The Barkleys of Broadway" (49).

Afterwards her engagements diminished plainly and she appeared only occasionallly in movies. To these productions belong "The Lonesome Trail" (55), "The Helen Morgan Story" (57) and "My Fair Lady" (64).

Betty Blythe was married with the actor Paul Scardon.
