The actor Basil Gill began his stage career at the end of the 19th century, his first play he took part was "The Sign of the Cross".
When he toured through Australia and the USA he returned to England and appeared by the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree's group in his first play by Shakespeare.

In the next years followed several other roles in plays like "Richard II", "The Merry Wives of Windsor", "The Tempest, "Much Ado About Nothing", "Hamlet", "The Winter's Tale", "Julius Caesar" and "Antony and Cleopatra".
In this time he became one of the most important interpreter of Shakespeare's plays.

Basil Gill made his film debut in 1911 with "Henry VIII" (11), from 1916 followed many other movies like "Chains of Bondage" (16), "The Adventures of Dick Dolan" (17), "Missing the Tide" (18), "The Soul of Guilda Lois" (19) and "The Irresistible Flapper" (19).

In the 20's he only too part in few more silent movies like "The Wordlings" (20) and "High Treason - Hochverrat" (28), his number of engagements increased only in the 30's when the talkies followed to the silent movies.

To his well-known movies of the 30's belong "School for Scandal" (30), "Glamour" (31), "The Wanderin Jew" (33), "Rembrandt" (36), "The Crimson Circle" (36), "Journey's End" (37) and "The Citadel" (38).
