The actor Henry Kolker made his first acting experiences at the theater,
finally he joined the film business at the age of 45 where he often impersonated
authoritarian characters like judges, dominating fathers, doctors, lawyers
or priests.
But before he took part in his first movie as an actor he realised the
movie "Santo Icario" (14) as a director.
In the next years he shot other movies as a director, among them "The
Third Generation" (20), "The Greatest Love" (20), "Disraeli" (21), "The
Leopardess" (23) and "The Great Well" (24).
But he had his greatest successes as a movie actor and from 1915 he
took part regularly in silent movies like "The Bigger Man" (15), "The Shell
Game" (18), "The Great Victory, Wilson or the Kaiser? The Fall of the Hohenzollerns"
(19), "A Man of Stone" (21), "Hell's Four Hundred" (26), "Annie Laurie"
(27) and "Coquette" (29).
His popularity increased with the beginning of the sound film era and
he appeared at the side of many great stars of that time like Gary Cooper,
Katherine Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyck and Melvyn Douglas.
To his numerous roles of those years belong "Abraham Lincoln" (30),
"Du Barry, Woman of Passion" (30), "The Spy" (31), "Rasputin and the Empress"
(32), "Baby Face" (33), "The Cat and the Fiddle" (34), "Whom the Gods Destroy"
(34), "Imitation of Life" (34), "Charlie Chan in Paris" (35), "Reckless"
(35), "Mad Love" (35), "The Last Days of Pompeii" (35), "The Great Impersonation"
(35), "Romeo and Juliet" (36), "Conquest" (37), "The Adventures of Marco
Polo" (38), "Marie Antoinette" (38), "Too Hot to Handle" (38), "Union Pacific"
(39) and "Here I Am a Stranger" (39).
After the excessive appearences of the 30s followed only few more movies
in the 40s, especially at the beginning of this decade.
To his last cinematical works belong "The Man Who Lost Himself" (41),
"Reunion in France" (42), "Bluebeard" (44) and "The Secret Life of Walter
Mitty" (47).
