Die Schauspielerin Myrtle Stedman begann ihre Laufbahn bereits 1897
auf der Bühne, wo sie im Chor für Stücke der leichten Oper
mitsang.
In den nächsten Jahren avancierte sie zur Leadsängering verschiedener
Shows, doch trotz des Erfolges entschied sie sich, ihre Musikkarriere zugunsten
einer Filmlaufbahn aufzugeben.
Sie und ihr Ehemann und Schauspieler Marshall Stedman wurden von Selig
Polyscope Co. 1910 unter Vertrag genommen.
In kürzester Zeit avancierte sie zu einer populären Filmdarstellerin
in diesem jungen Medium und dank ihrer athletischen Fähigkeiten wurde
sie auch in Abenteuerfilmen und Western eingesetzt.
Zu ihren ersten Filmen gehören "The Range Riders" (10), "A New
York Cowboy" (11), "The Two Orphans" (11), "Two Men and a Girl" (12), "In
Little Italy" (12), "Baby Betty" (12), "A Motorcylce Adventure" (12), "The
Opium Smugglers" (12), "The Suffragette" (13), "The Bank's Messenger" (13),
"The Law and the Outlaw" (13), "The Jealousy of Miguel and Isabella" (13),
"The Lonely Heart" (13) und "Buster's Little Game" (13).
1914 wechselte sie zur Bosworth Company und sie konnte ihre Filmlaufbahn
in den nächsten Jahren weiterhin sehr erfolgreich gestalten.
Zu ihren bekanntesten Arbeiten der nächsten Jahre gehören
"The Country Mouse" (14), "Hypocrites" (15), "Help Wanted" (15), "Peer
Gynt" (15), "The American Beauty" (16), "The World Apart" (17), "In the
Hollow of Her Hand" (18) und "The Teeth of the Tiger" (19).
Anfangs der 20er Jahre entstanden ihre letzten grossen Filme mit "Harriet
and the Piper" (20), "The Whistle" (21), "Reckless Youth" (22), "The Dangerous
Age" (23) und "The Famous Mrs. Fair" (23).
Danach ging ihre Popularität zurück und musste einer neuen
Generation von Stars Platz machen.
Sie blieb dem Filmgeschäft aber weiterhin treu und verkörperte
Nebenrollen in Produktionen wie "Lilies of the Field" (24), "Sally" (25),
"Don Juan's Three Nights" (26), "The Black Diamond Express" (27), "The
Irresistible Lover" (27) und "The Jazz Age" (29).
In den 30er Jahren entstanden ihre letzten filmischen Arbeiten mit
"Beau Ideal" (31), "Forbidden Company" (32), "Klondike" (32), "San Francisco"
(36), "The Great O'Malley" (37), "Confession" (37), "A Slight Case of Murder"
(38) und "Accidents Will Happen" (38).
Nach einer Herzattacke verstarb Myrtle Stedman kurze Zeit später
im Alter von 52 Jahren.
Ihr Sohn Lincoln Stedman wurde ebenfalls Schauspieler.
