. The actress Fay Compton was born as Virginia Lilian Emmeline MackenzieCompton in London. Her parents Edward Compton and Virginia Bateman were both theater actors. Also her grandfather Henry Compton was the theatrical celebrity in the 19th century. Therefore it was the obvious thing that Fay Compton also chose the profession of acting. She soon had great successes at the theater and was convincing in plays like "Mary Rose" (20). She also had the privilege to play together on stage with two of the most important Hamlet interpreters - John Barrymore and John Gielgud. She made her film debut already in 1914 in "She Stoops to Conquer".
It followed the silent movies "One Summer's Day" (17) and "The Labour Leader"
(17).
Although she had a trained voice because of her theater experience she only appeared in few movies in the 30's like "Cape Forlorn" (31), "Waltzes from Vienna" (33), "Autumn Crocus" (34) and "The Mill on the Floss" (37). Her main attention was always focused to the theater where she went
on acting successfully in plays like "Call it a Day" and "Blithe Spirit".
Her sister Viola Compton became also an actress, her brother Sir Compton
Mackenzie became a distinguished writer. Fay Compton's Sohn Anthony Pelissier
continued the family tradition as a director and screen writer.
