The actor Cedric Hardwicke belonged to the most important British stage
and film actors of his time.
He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his stage debut
in 1912. Only one year later he had already his first and only film appearance
for the time being in "Riches and Rogues".
The outbreak of World War I interrupted his new career, only in 1922
he returned on stage where he had his breakthrough with the title role
in the play "Caesar and Cleopatra". The famous writer George Bernard Shaw
declared him to his favourite actor.
In 1926 followed his second and last silent movie "Nelson" before he
conquered the big screen in the 30's.
In the 30's he became not only established as a stage actor but also
as a movie star. He impersonated very different and qualitative high-quality
parts, both in England and in the USA.
To his popluar movies of the 30's belong "Dreyfus" (31), "Nell Gwyn"
(34), "The King of Paris" (34), "Jew Süss" (34), "Les Misérables"
(35), "Things to Come" (36), "Green Light" (37), "King Solomon's Mines"
(37), "Stanley and Livingstone" (39) and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"
(39).
Thanks his important role at the British theater and in the film busines
he was knighted in 1934.
In the 40's he appeared in other important productions. He was convincing
the audience and critics with movies like "The Invisible Man Returns" (40),
"Valley of the Sun" (42), "Forever and a Day" (43), "The Cross of Lorraine"
(43), "The Lodger" (44), "Sentimental Journey" (46), "Nicholas Nickleby"
(47), "The Imperfect Lady" (47), "Ivy" (47), "Rope" (48) and "Now Barabbas"
(49).
From the 50's he often took part in TV productions but he kept still
present on the big screen in popular movies.
To his works in those years belong "The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel"
(51), "The Green Glove" (52), "Salome" (53), "Richard III" (55), "Diane"
(56), "Helen of Troy" (56), "The Ten Commandments" (56), "Around the World
in Eighty Days" (56), "The Story of Mankind" (57) and "Baby Face Nelson"
(57).
Ha made his last appearances for "The Magic Fountain" (61), "Five Weeks
in a Balloon" (62) and "The Pumpkin Eater" (64).
Cedrid Hardwicke was among others married with the actress Helena
Pickard and their son Edward Hardwicke became also an actor.
