The actor William Surrey Hart was one of the first Cowboy legends of
the American silent movie era who enjoyed an enormous popularity in the
10's.
He began his career with acting studies by F.F. Markey. It followed
theater tours and appearances on Broadway. One of his greatest successes
on stage he had with "Ben Hur" in 1899 where he impersonated the villain
Messala. But also western plays belonged to his repertoire like "The Squaw
Man" in 1905 and "The Virginian" in 1907.
Thanks to his theater role as Messale he made his film debut in 1907
when "Ben Hur" was filmed. Director was Sidney Olcott.
But it lastest seven years more before he was able to start his real
film career. He managed his breakthrough on the big screen in 1914 and
played numerous roles from now on.
To his first movies belong "The Gringo" (14), "The Bargain" (14), "The
Scourge of the Desert" (15), "The Grudge" (15), "The Darkening Trail" (15),
"Pinto Ben" (15) and "Between Men" (15).
In the second half of the 10's he increased his popularity and William
S. Hart took part in many popular productions. To these movies belong "The
Aryan" (16), "The Man from Nowhere" (16), "The Patriot" (16), "The Gun
Fighter" (17), "The Lion of the Hills" (18), "The Tiger Man" (18), "The
Border Wireless" (18), "The Money Corral" (19) and "Wagon Tracks" (19).
His enormous success was also reflected in his salary. In 1915 he got
several hundred Dollars a week, in 1917 he got $150'000 per movie.
His fame diminished soon in the 20's, new western heros conquered the
favour of the audience.
To William S. Hart's few movies of those years belong "Sand!" (20),
"The Testing Block" (20), "The Whistle" (21), "White Oak" (21), "Wild Bill
Hickok" (23) and "Tubleweeds" (25), afterwards he retired from the film
business.
In 1929 he published his autobriography called "My Life - East and
West".
Besides his activity as an actor he was also a director, writer and
producer.
