The actor Adolphe Menjou was regarded as one of the best dresses actors,
whose aristocratic charisma fascinated. But especially roles which were
opposite his type left the strongest impression on the big screen.
Adophe Menjou began his career at the vaudeville theater, and he made
his film debut with "The Man Behind the Door" (15).
Till his service during World War I you could see him in the movies
"A Parisian Romance" (16), "The Devil at His Elbow" (16), "The Kiss" (16)
and "The Amazons" (17). After that he only appeared in movies from 1920
but in more imposing parts and movies.
He played at Rudolph Valentino's side in the film "The Sheik" (21) and
with Douglas Fairbanks sr. in "The Three Musketeers"
(21). It followed "Arabian Love" (22), "Clarence" (22), "The Eternal Flame"
(22), "Bella Donna" (23) and finally the leading part in Charlie
Chaplin's "A Woman of Paris" (23).
Other successful movies of the 20's were "The Marriage Circle" (24),
"Forbidden Paradise" (24), "The Swan" (25), "The Sorrows of Satan" (26),
"A Gentleman of Paris" (27) and "Serenade" (27).
In the 30's followed a multitude of roles, but the quality of the movies
very very different. To his greatest successes of the sound film era belong
"Morocco" (30) at Gary Cooper's and Marlene
Dietrich's side, and "The Front Page" (31), for which he was nominated
for an Oscar. Other successful productions were "Forbidden" (32), "Morning
Glory" (33), "Sing, Baby, Sing" (36), "A Star Is Born" (37) and "Stage
Door" (37).
His appearances became more rarely in the 40's and 50's but his elegant
appearance gave his movies a touch of elegance which remembered to the
good old time.
Adolphe Menjou took part in "Roxie Hart" (42), "Man Alive" (45), "The
Hucksters" (47), "State of the Union" (48), "The Tall Target" (51), "The
Sniper" (52) and "Polyanne" (60) and got an impressive role in Stanley
Kubrick's movie "Paths of Glory" (57) with Kirk Douglas.
When the witch-hunt of the McCarthy politic in the 50's began, Adolphe
Menjou was also summoned, where he hold a hard anticommunistic outlook
and denounced some of his actor colleagues.
Adolphe Menjou published his autobiography "It Took Nine Tailors" in
1947.
