. The little Nordic country Denmark took up a unique position in the world film market in the 1910's. Between 1910 and 1918 Denmark produced the unbelievable number of about 1200 feature films, which let look the other film countries at it with envy. The triumphant advance of the Danish filmindustrie began already in 1910 when the great Asta Nielsen became the first European star with the movie "Abgrund". Also in 1910 made the actor Valdemar Psilander his debut as an actor
on the screen in the movie "Dorian Grays Porträt" (10). One year later
he worked for the first time for the Nordisk company in the movie "Ved
Faengslets Port - Versuchungen der Grossstadt/An der Tür des Gefängnisses"
(11). With this and the following movies he became one of the greatest
filmstars in his time.
The Nordisk was the first European film company which oriented itself her complete production to long lasting movies because of the early successes of Asta Nielsen and Valdemar Psilander. The company earned a fortune with the pictures of Valdemar Psilander but when Psilander demanded a salary of 250'000 krones at the end of 1916, the Nordisk decided to refuse. Valdemar Psilander committed suicide in 1917 at the height of his career.
