1892 - 1992

The producer and director Hal Roach belongs to the most important film pioneers of the USA. We owe star comedians like Harold Lloyd or Laurel & Hardy to him but also the unforgettable "Little Rascals - Our Gang". The work of Hal Roach comprises an almost unbelievable number of movies, especially as a producer he was responsible for more than 700 movies

Hal Roach went to Hollywood in 1912 where he practised different jobs, among others as an extra for small movies. At the same time he met the extra Harold Lloyd and their friendship led to a great cooperation.

Thanks to an inheritance Hal Roach was able to found his own company and he signed Harold Lloyd on as his first star. Roach already worked as a director too for his first movies and realised a whole string of movies with Lloyd concerning the figure Lonesome Luke.
At the end of the first decade of his film work Hal Roach belonged to the most important producers and directors, Harold Lloyd became a great comedy star.

To Hal Roach's movies of the 10's belong among others "Just Nuts" (15), "Lonesome Luke" (15), "Luke's Double" (16), "Luke's Lost Liberty" (17), "Lonesome Luke's Honeymoon" (17), "Rainbow Island" (17), "The Non-Stop Kid" (18), "Somewhere in Turkey" (18), "Ask Father" (19), "Ring Up the Curtain" (19) and "Count the Votes" (19).

His empire became so big in the 20's that he let direct most of his movies by other directors. He concentrated on the important job of a producer and landed a world-wide success with his idea of "Our Gang - The Little Rascals", which he produced from 1922. Beside it he engaged Will Rogers and shot many comedies, and he also engaged Charley Chase, first as a director, later Chase became one of the most successful comedians of the silent movie era. 

Finally it followed Hal Roach's biggest lucky strike with the union of Oliver Hardy and Stan Laurel to the most famous film duo of all time.

The talkies didn't have any effect on Hal Roach's trimphant advance. "Our Gang" and Laurel & Hardy achieved bigger successes in the 30's than ever. And with the decision to present Laurel & Hardy also in feature films besides the short films he cemented the immortality of the two.

Hal Roach made a huge rearrangement in the middle of the 30's. He sold the rights of "Our Gang" to MGM and turned away from short films.
He began to produce more feature movies and was successful with "Topper" (37), "There Goes My Heart" (38), "Of Mice and Men" (39), "Captain Fury" (39) and "One Million B.C." (40)

At the beginning of the 40's he launched comedies with William Bendix and Noah Beery jr. but he go on from earlier successes.
Hal Roach served in the army during World War II and his studio produced a whole string of movies concerning the war. When Roach tried to gain a foothold as a producer after the war he failed with movies like "Curley" (46) and "Who Killed Doc Robbin" (48). So he felt compelled to retire from the film business and went to the TV.
Hal Roach sold his studio to his son in 1955, but bad business practices led to the bankruptcy of the studio only few years later.

Hal Roach came especially as a producer for the TV to the fore, after that he retired and was only rarely active as a producer.

During his intensive film career he got an Oscar for the Laurel & Hardy classic "The Music Box" in 1932 and another Oscar for "Bored of Education" (36). Moreover he was nominated for the Oscar for "Tit for Tat" (35).
When Hal Roach was achieved with the Honorary Award he delivered an address to the audience. But at that moment the microphone broke down and the audience couldn't hear a single word. At the end of his speech remarked Billy Crystal - who run the ceremony - that we all know now why the 10's and 20's were called "the silent era".
