The actress Blanche Sweet was born into an acting family and had her
first appearance at the age of four.
Therefore it doesn't surprise that the petite actress could already
gain a foothold in the film business in 1909. In the first years she took
part in numerous movies, especially with the legendary director D.W. Griffith
who often offered her strong woman parts. Her movies with Griffith were
among others "A Corner in Wheat" (09), "A Romance of the Western Hills"
(10), "The Lonedale Operator" (11), "Judith of Bethulia" (14) and "Home,
Sweet Home" (14).
When she went to the Lasky Feature Play Company in 1915 there came great
successes like "The Warrens of Virginia" (15), "The Ragamuffin" (16) and
"The Storm" (16) into being.
The year 1917 was very important for Blanche Sweet. She met director
Marshall Neilan and fell in love with him. They shot some popular movies
like "Those Without Sin" (17), "The Tides of Barnegat" (17), "The Silent
Partner" (17), "The Unpardonable Sin" (19), "Tess of the D'Urbervilles"
(24), "Sporting Venus" (25) and their last common movie "Diplomacy" (26).
The marriage was dissolved in 1929.
Other well-known silent movies with Blanche Sweet were "A Woman of Pleasure"
(19), "Simple Souls" (20), "Quincy Adams Sawyer" (22), "The Meanest Man
in the World" (23), "Anna Christie" (23) - one of her best performances
- "The Lady From Hell" (26) and "Bluebeard's Seven Wives" (26).
Whe the younger generation followed and the sound film changed the film
business completely, Blanche Sweet only took part in three talkies called
"Show Girl in Hollywood" (30), "The Silver Horde" (30) and "The Woman Racket"
(30). After that she retired from the film business and appeared at Vaudeville
and other theaters.
She made a short comeback in 1959 with her entrance in "The Five Pennies"
(59) - her very latest movie.
Blanche Sweet offered her services for historians in the 60's who tried
to reconstruct the history of Hollywood, and helped them with her huge
experience she made during the silent movie era.
