Der Filmausstatter Alexander Golitzen wurde als Prinz Alexander Alexandrovich
Galitzine geobren und gehörte zu den meistbeschäftigten Art Directors,
speziell in den 50er und 60er Jahren. Meistens arbeitete er für Universal.
Seine Familie lebte in Russland, als diese aufgrund der russischen
Revolution via Sibirien und China nach Amerika fliehen musste, wo Alexander
Golitzen im Alter von 16 Jahren ankam.
Dort fand er schon bald wieder Tritt im Leben und schloss an der Universität
in Washington in Architektur ab.
Als er 1933 nach Los Angeles zog, konnte er als Assistent für
Alexander Toluboff bei MGM arbeiten. Als Illustrator war er am Film "Queen
Christina" (33) mit Greta Garbo beteiligt.
Ab 1935 konnte Alexander Golitzen sich als Filmausstatter betätigen
und arbeitete für verschiedene Studios. Zu seinen ersten Arbeiten
gehören "The Call of the Wild" (35) "Eternally Yours" (39), "Foreign
Correspondent" (40) von Alfred Hitchcock und "That Uncertain Feeling" (41).
1942 kam er durch Walter Wanger zu Universal und fand dort in den kommenden
Jahrzehnten dankbare Aufgaben, die ihm den Status eines Stars unter den
Filmausstattern nebst Cedric Gibbons verliehen.
Zu seinen bekanntesten Arbeiten der 40er Jahre gehören "Arabian
Nights" (42), "Phantom of the Opera" (43), "The Climax" (44), "Salome Where
She Danced" (45), "Letter from an Unknown Woman" (48), "The Lady Gambles"
(49) und "Bagdad" (49).
In den 50er Jahren folgte eine grosse Anzahl von Filmen, an denen Alexander
Golitzen für die Filmausstattung verantwortlich war.
Zu den populärsten Produktionen dieser Jahre zählen "Spy
Hunt" (50), "Against All Flags" (52), "City Beneath the Sea" (53), "Seminole"
(53), "Law and Order" (53), "All I Desire" (53), "The Man from the Alamo"
(53), "Naked Alibi" (54), "Destry" (54), "Tarantula" (55), "The Benny Goodman
Story" (56), "The Price of Fear" (56), "The Incredible Shrinking Man" (57),
"Kelly and Me" (57), "Man of a Thousand Faces" (57), "My Man Godfrey" (57),
"Touch of Evil" (58), "A Time to Love and a Time to Die" (58), "Imitation
of Life" (59), "The Wild and the Innocent" (59) und "Operation Petticoat"
(59).
Ab den 60er Jahren nahm die Anzahl der Filme etwas ab, die Qualität
jedoch blieb unvermindert hoch und führte zu vielen Auszeichnungen.
Als Filmausstatter verhalf er grossartigen Filmen wie "Spartacus" (60),
"Midnight Lace" (60), "The Great Impostor" (61), "Cape Fear" (62), "To
Kill a Mockingbird" (62), "Bedtime Story" (64), "Send Me No Flowers" (64),
"Mirage" (65), "Blindfold" (65), "Madame X" (66), "Beau Geste" (66), "Thoroughly
Modern Millie" (67), "The Perils of Pauline" (67), "Madigan" (68), "Coogan's
Bluff" (68), "Sweet Charity" (69) und "Eye of the Cat" (69).
Die 70er Jahren markierten das letzte Jahrzehnt seiner langjährigen
Filmlaufbahn, 1974 setzte er sich schliesslich zur Ruhe.
Zu seinen letzten filmischen Arbeiten gehören "Airport" (70),
"Colossus: The Forbin Project" (70), "Raid on Rommel" (71), "Slaughterhouse-Five"
(72), "Joe Kidd" (72) und "Earthquake" (74).
Zu den Regisseuren, die immer wieder gerne mit Alexander Golitzen zusammenarbeiteten,
gehörte Douglas Sirk, der Alexander Golitzen für 13 Filme engagierte.
Alexander Golitzen gewann in seiner eindrucksvollen Laufbahn drei Oscars
in den Jahren 1944, 1961 und 1963, zudem wurde er für 11 weitere Oscars
nominiert 1941, 1942, 1943, 1945, 1962, 1963, 1967, 1968, 1970, 1971 und
1975.
