1897 - 1981

Geboren wurde Edith Head als Edith Claire Posener. 
Nach ihrem Abschluss in Französisch gab sie in den 20er Jahren Unterricht in den Fächern Französisch und Kunst, zunächst an der Bishop's School in La Jolla, später an der Hollywood-Schule für Mädchen .

Da sie sich für die Zeichenkunst interessierte, besuchte sie nebenher eine Abendschule für Zeichenkunst, eine Ausbildung, die ihr für ihre zukünftige Laufbahn als Kostümbildnerin sehr zugute kam.

Als sich Edith Head 1924 bei Paramount Pictures für die Kostümabteilung bewarb, konnte sie keinerlei Erfahrung darin aufweisen. Wie sie später erzählte, nahm sie eine Zeichnung eines Studienkollegen an das Bewerbungsgespräch mit.

Der Trick klappte und Edith Head wurde engagiert und sie entwarf erste Kostüme für "The Wanderer" (25), "Wings" (27), "The Legion of the Condemned" (28) und "The Saturday Night Kid" (29).

Mitte der 30er Jahre folgte der Durchbruch und Edith Head etablierte sich als begnadete Kostümbildnerin und sie entwarf für Paramount unzählige Kostüme in ebenso unzähligen Filmen bis 1967.

Zu ihren bekanntesten Filmen der 30er Jahre gehören Klassiker wie "Till We Meet Again" (36), "Wells Fargo" (37), "If I Were King" (38), "Beau Geste" (39), "The Cat and the Canary" (39) und "Hotel Imperial" (39).

In den 40er Jahren entstanden unzählige Filme, deren Kostüme von Edith Head und ihrem Team kreiert wurden. Dazu gehören "Road to Singapore" (40), "The Great McGinty" (40), "The Lady Eve" (41), "Sullivan's Travels" (41), "The Glass Key" (42), "I Married a Witch" (42), "Five Graves to Cairo" (43), "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek" (44), "Double Indemnity" (44), "Ministry of Fear" (44), "The Lost Weekend" (45), "The Blue Dahlia" (46), "The Strange Love of Marthe Ivers" (46), "Notorious" (46), "The Perils of Pauline" (47), "The Farmer's Daughter" (47), "The Big Clock" (48), "The Emperor Waltz" (48), "Sorry, Wrong Number" (48), "The Great Gatsby" (49), "Rope of Sand" (49) und "Samson and Delilah" (49).

Die 50er und die 60er Jahre markierten den Höhepunkt ihrer Laufbahn und ihre Schaffenskraft beeindruckt auch heute noch.

Alleine in den 50er Jahren wurde sie von 1950 bis 1959 ohne Unterbruch immer mindestens für einen Oscar nominiert und gewann diesen sechs Mal.

Zu den Filmklassikern der 50er Jahre, für die Edith Head die Kostüme entwarf, gehören "Sunset Blvd." (50), "All About Eve" (50), "The Greatest Show on Earth" (52), "Carrie" (52), "Come Back, Little Sheba" (52), "Shane" (53), "The War of the Worlds" (53), "Roman Holiday" (53), "The Naked Jungle" (54), "Elephant Walk" (54), "Sabrina" (54), "Rear Window" (54), "To Catch a Thief" (55), "The Court Jester" (55), "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (56), "The Ten Commandments" (56), "Vertigo" (58), "The Black Orchid" (58), "Houseboat" (58) und "Last Train from Gun Hill" (59).

Ihren Status als ungekrönte Königin der Kostümbildner und -bildnerinnen zementierte sie auch in den 60er Jahren und sie war nicht nur die unbestrittene Nummer eins bei Paramount Pictures sondern auch von Hollywood.
Dennoch wechselte sie 1967 von Paramount zu Universal Pictures.

Die bekanntesten Produktionen dieser Jahre sind "The Rat Race" (60), "Cinderfella" (60), "Pocketful of Miracles" (61), "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (62), "The Nutty Professor" (63), "The Birds" (63), "The Patsy" (64), "Marnie" (64), "John Goldfarb, Please Come Home!" (65), "The Oscar" (66), "Torn Curtain" (66), "Barefoot in the Park" (67), "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (69), "Topas" (69) und "Sweet Charity" (69).

Obwohl Edith Head in der Zwischenzeit über 70 Jahre alt war, kam ein Ruhestand für sie nicht in Frage. Zu sehr machte ihr die kreative Arbeit Spass. Zudem war sie in der glücklichen Lage, ihren Beruf bis zu ihrem Tod auch gesundheitlich ausüben zu können.

So finden sich in ihrer umfangreichen Filmographie auch in den 70er Jahren etliche Produktionen, die in die Filmgeschichte eingingen.
Darunter findet man "Airport" (70), "Colossus" (70), "Myra Breckinridge" (70), "Pete 'n' Tillie" (72), "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean" (72), "Hammersmith Is Out" (72), "The Sting" (73), "Earthquake" (74), "The Man Who Would Be King" (75), "Family Plot" (76) und "Woman in White" (79).

Mit den Filmen "The Last Married Couple in America" (80) und "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" (82) verabschiedete sie sich von der Leinwand.

In der einmaligen Karriere von Edith Head wurde sie in den Jahren 1950, 1951 (2 Oscars), 1952, 1954, 1955, 1961 und 1974 mit insgesamt 8 Oscars ausgezeichnet.
Daneben wurde sie für 27 weitere Oscars nominiert.

Neben dem Film war sie besonders stolz auf den Auftrag, für die United States Coast Guard eine neue Frauenuniform Ende der 70er Jahre zu kreieren

Edith Head war unter anderem mit dem Filmausstatter Wiard Ihnen verheiratet.

 In späteren Jahren gab es Vorwürfe, dass Edith auch die Lorbeeren für Arbeiten ihrer Team-Mitarbeiter erhielt. Es war jedoch üblich, dass der Leiter der Kostümabteilung in den Filmcredits erwähnt wurde. Selbstverständlich war die grosse Zahl von Filmen mit Kostümen von Edith Head nur mit einem entsprechenden Team möglich und hätte nicht durch eine Person alleine bewältigt werden können.

Ihr Markenzeichen - die Sonnenbrille - war eigentlich keine Brille im herkömmlichen Sinne sondern war mit blauen Linsen bestückt, die es ihr erlaubten zu beurteilen, wie farbige Kostüme in einem Schwarz-Weiss-Film zur Geltung kamen.
