Arletty

. The actress Arletty was born as Arlette-Léonie Marie Julie Bathiat in Courbevoie. Before she became famous as an actress she worked as a secretary and model. In 1930 she made her film debut with "La douceur d'aimer" (30). She got offered more and more demanding roles in the next years and she took part in movies like "Une idée folle" (32), "La belle aventure" (32), "La guerre des valses" (33), "Le vertige" (36), "Aventure à Paris" (36), "Désiré" (37) and "Mirages" (37). She had her greatest success under the direction of Marcel Carné in the movies "Hôtel du Nord" (38), "Le jour se lève" (39) and "Les visiteurs du soir" (42), and when she appeared in Carné's classic "Les enfants du paradis - Kinder des Olymp" (45) she reached the height of her career. But at the same time the course for her fall from the Olymp was already
set. She was sentenced to a two-month imprisonment because of collaboration
- that is an affair with a German air force officer.
When she made her comeback in 1947 she wasn't able to go on from her earlier career still the impressive actress acted in several movies, among them "Madame et ses peaux-rouges" (48), "Georges Braque" (50), "Le grand jeu" (54), "The Stowaway" (58), "Maxime" (58), "The Longest Day" (62) and "La loi des hommes" (62). Arletty got serious eye problems after an accident, finally she went
blind. Despite this handicap she always took a time for her fans and granted
all autograph requests.
