The actor Serge Reggiani was not only very successful in front of the
camera but also had a considerable talent as a singer, poet and painter.
After his education to an actor at the conservatory in Paris in 1943
he first impersonated impressive roles at the theater.
During his education he already had his first appearances in movies
like "Conflit" (39), "Le voyageur de la Toussaint" (43) and "Le carrefour
des enfants perdus" (44), but only after the war he became a demanded character
actor on the big screen.
His breakthrough came in 1945 with "François Villon" (45), it
followed "Etoile sans lumière" (46), "Les portes de la nuit" (46),
"Le mystère de la chambre jaune" (48) and "Les amants de Vérone"
(49).
He took part in some very important productions of the 50's. To these
well-known movies belong "La ronde - Der Reigen" (50), "Casque d'or - Goldhelm"
(52), "Napoléon" (55), "Elisa" (57), "Les Misérables" (58)
and "Marie-Octobre" (59).
In the 60's and 70's he often impersonated cheated characters who were
betrayed by friends or were treated badly by the destiny. A kind of role
which fitted perfectly to the film noire.
He became popular with the productions "Paris Blues" (61), "Il gattopardo
- Der Leopard" (63), "L'enfer" (64), "La vingt-cinquième heure -
Die 25. Stunde" (67), "Les aventuriers" (67), "Les Caïds" (72), "Touche
pas à la femme blanche - Berühre nicht die weisse Frau" (74),
"Vincent, François, Paul...et les autres" (75) and "Violette &
François" (77).
To Serge Reggiani's last movies belong "La terrazza - Die Terasse" (80),
"Mauvais sang" (86), "Il y a des jours...et des lunes" (90), "I Hired a
Contract Killer" (90), "Rosenemil" (93) and "Héroïnes" (97).
Besides his acting he obtained a name recognition as a chansoniere from
1960. Later he performed together with his children Stephan and Carine
but they were in their father's shadow.
When his son Stephan bear this fact anly longer he committed suicide
in 1980. This bad blow hit Serge Reggiani so hard that he retired from
singing and from now on he had to struggle against depression and alcohol.
In this difficult time he discovered painting and was able to provide
some exhibitions with his paintings.
Serge Reggiani was among others married with the actresses Annie Noël
and Janine Darcey.
