. Der Filmkomponist Hugo Friedhofer gehörte ab den 30er Jahren zu den vielbeschäftigten Filmkomponisten Hollywoods und erlebte den Höhepunkt seiner Karriere in den 40er und 50er Jahren. Aufgewachsen in einer musikalischen Familie - seine Mutter war eine Pianistin, sein Vater ein Cellist - spielte für den jungen Hugo Friedhofer die Musik eine wichtige Rolle in seinem Leben. Er erlernte das Cellospiel und studierte später bei Domenico Brescia Komposition. Ab 1920 verdiente er sich seinen Lebensunterhalt als Cellist bei der "People's Symphony Orchestra", ehe er 1929 mit der Filmwelt in Kontakt kam. Zunächst begleitete er Filme als Pianist, wurde aber schon bald darauf bei Fox als Arrangeur engagiert. 1935 folgte der Wechsel zu Warner Brothers, wo er mit Max Steiner zusammenarbeitete und für Erich Wolfgang Korngold orchestrierte. Ab 1942 avancierte Hugo Friedhofer zum Filmkomponisten bei 20th Century Fox Studios. Zu seinen ersten Filmkompositionen gehören "Seven Faces" (29), "A Devil with Women" (30), "The Princess and the Plumber" (30), "The Spider" (31), "After Tomorrow" (32), "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" (32), "The Painted Woman" (32), "Sherlock Holmes" (32), "Orient Express" (34), "Pursued" (34), "Curly Top" (35), "Dante's Inferno" (35) und "The Adventures of Marco Polo" (38). In den 40er Jahren setzte er seine Laufbahn erfolgreich fort und er schrieb die Musik für Filme wie "The Mark of Zorro" (40), "China Girl" (42), "Lifeboat" (44), "The Lodger" (44), "The Woman in the Window" (44), "Along Came Jones" (45), "Gilda" (46), "The Best Years of Our Lives" (46), "Body and Soul" (47), "The Bishop's Wife" (47), "Adventures of Casanova" (48), "A Song Is Born" (48), "Joan of Arc" (48) und "Bride of Vengeance" (49). Für "The Best Years of Our Lives" wurde Hugo Friedhofer mit einem Oscar ausgezeichnet, für drei weitere Filme wurde er zudem für einen Oscar nominiert. Auch die 50er Jahre gestalteten sich sehr erfolgreich und Hugo Friedhofer arbeitete an einer Fülle von Filmen mit. Zu seinen Filmkompositionen gehören "Broken Arrow" (50), "Edge of Doom" (50), "Ace in the Hole / Reporter des Satans" (51), "The San Francisco Story" (52), "Above and Beyond" (52), "Hondo" (53), "Vera Cruz" (54), "Violent Saturday" (55), "The Rains of Ranchipur" (55), "The Revolt of Mamie Stover" (56), "Between Haven and Hell" (57), "An Affair to Remember" (57), "Boy on a Dolphin" (57), "The Young Lions" (58), "The Bravados" (58), "The Barbarian and the Geisha" (58), "In Love and War" (58), "This Earth Is Mine" (59) und "Never So Few" (59). In diesen Jahren wurden seine Arbeiten erneut für fünf weitere Oscars nominiert. Seine letzten filmischen Arbeiten entstanden für "One-Eyed Jacks" (61), "Geronimo" (62), "Beauty and the Beast" (62), die Serie "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (64), die Serie "I Spy" (66-68), eine Episode der Serie "The F.B.I.: The Traitor" (70), "Von Richthofen and Brown" (72), "A Walk in the Forest" (75) und "Die Sister, Die!" (78). Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Filmkomponist war er an zahlreichen Filmen als Orchestrator beteiligt, zudem steuerte er zusätzliche Musik (Additional Music) zu Filmen bei und zahlreiche Noten aus seiner Hand wurden als sogenannte Stock Music in Produktionen verwendet.
