Irving Gertz studierte am Providence College of Music und kam nach
Abschluss des Studiums zu Columbia Pictures.
Doch bevor er seine Tätigkeit als Filmkomponist aufnehmen konnte,
stoppte der Krieg seine musikalische Laufbahn und er diente die nächsten
fünf Jahre bei der U.S. Army Signal Corps.
1946 kehrte zurück zu Columbia und startete seine Karriere als
Filmkomponist mit Filmen wie "Cigarette Girl" (47), "Dragnet" (47), "The
Counterfeiters" (48) und "Blonde Ice" (49).
Daneben studierte er weiter Musik bei Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco
und Ernst Toch.
Irving Gertz studierte mit Wassili Leps am Providence College of
Music. Nach Abschluss des Studiums konnte er sich erfolgreich bei Columbia
Pictures in New York bewerben.
Doch bevor er seine ersten Filmkompositionen schreiben konnte, wurde
seine Karriere durch den Krieg gestoppt. In den nächsten fünf
Jahren diente er bei der U.S. Army Signal Corps.
1947 kehrte er zu Columbia zurück und komponierte seine ersten
Filmmusiken für „Cigarette Girl“ (47), „Dragnet“ (47), „Prejudice“
(48), „The Counterfeiters“ (48), „Adventures of Gallant Bess“ (48) und
„Blonde Ice“ (48). Gleichzeitig vertiefte er seine musikalischen Kenntnisse
mit Studien bei Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco und Ernst Toch.
In den nächsten Jahren vertonte Irving Gertz vor allem Filme
von Universal aber auch für andere Produktionsgesellschaften.

„The Incredible Shrinking Man“ (57), „Hell Canyon Outlaws“ (57), „The Monolith
Munsters“ (57), „Hell on Devil‘s Island“ (57), „The Deadly Mantis“ (57),
„Thundering Jets“ (58), „Curse of the Undead“(59) und „The Alligator People“
(59).
In seinem letzten Jahrzehnt als Filmkomponist arbeitete Irving Gertz
meist für Twentieth Century-Fox und er vertonte Filme wie "Young Jesse
James" (60)„The Wizard of Baghdad“(60), „13 Fighting Men“ (60), "Flaming
Star" (60) „Brushfire“ (62), „Daniel Boone“ (64), „The Legend of Jesse
James“ (65), „The Invaders“(67) und „Nobody‘s Perfect“ (68).
Danach zog er sich vom Filmgeschäft
