1936 - 2004

Der Schritt zum Film kam, als er von Regisseur Alan J. Pakula für den Film "Up the Down Staircase" (67) als Komponist engagiert wurde. Durch diese Arbeit fasste er Fuss beim Film und avancierte in den 70er und 80er Jahren zu einem vielbeschäftigten Filmkomponisten.

Zu seinen nächsten Filmen gehören "Yours, Mine and Ours" (68), "Lovers and Other Strangers" (70), die ihm einen Oscar für den besten Song einbrachte, "The Little Ark" (72), "Westworld" (73), "Born Innocent" (74), "Mastermind" (76), "Futureworld" (76), "Minstrel Man" (77), "Intimate Strangers" (77), "Samurai" (79), "California Dreaming" (79) und "Vampire" (79).

In den 80er Jahren folgte nochmals eine Vielzahl von interessanten Filmkompositionen für bekannte Produktionen, dazu gehören "Mom, the Wolfman and Me" (80), "Thornwell" (81), "Bitter Harvest" (81), "Deadly Encounter" (82), "Calamity Jane" (84), "A Place to Call Home" (87) und "Fear Stalk" (89).

In den 90er Jahren schrieb Fred Karlin nur noch für wenige Filme die Musik, darunter "Murder C.O.D." (90), "The Last Prostitute" (91), "The Secret" (92) und "Lost Treasure of Dos Santos" (97).

Nebst dem Oscar wurde Fred Karlin für drei weitere Oscars nominiert.
