David Newmans Weg zur Filmmusik war schon früh vorgezeichnet,
sein Vater war der berühmte Filmkomponist Alfred Newman, der in seiner
Laufbahn neun Oscars erhielt.
Auch weitere Familienmitglieder traten in diese Fussstapfen, so
sein Bruder Thomas Newman, seine Cousins Randy Newman und Joey Newman sowie
seine Onkel Lionel Newman und Emil Newman.
David Newman erlernte im Kindesalter das Spiel der klassischen Violine
und später erlernte er das Dirigieren.
Mitte der 80er Jahre entstanden seine ersten Filmkompositionen für
"Critters" (86), "Vendetta" (86), "Malone" (87), "Heathers" (89), "The
War of the Roses" (89) und "Little Monsters" (89).
In den 90er Jahren etablierte er sich als Filmkomponist und vertonte
bekannte Produktionen wie "The Freshman" (90), "Mr. Destiny" (90), "Bill
& Ted's Bogus Journey" (91), "The Mighty Ducks" (92), "Hoffa" (92),
"Coneheads" (93), "The Flintstones" (94), "The Phantom" (96), "The Nutty
Professor" (96), "Matilda" (96) und "Bowfinger" (99).
Zu seinen jüngsten filmischen Arbeiten gehören "Bedazzled"
(00), "102 Dalmatians" (00), "Dr. Dolittle 2" (01), "Ice Age" (02), "Scooby-Doo"
(02), "The Cat in the Hat" (03), "Serenity" (05) und "Norbit" (07).
David Newman wurde 1998 für seine Musik zu "Anastasia" (97)
für einen Oscar nominiert.
