Die 30er Jahre markierten den Höhepunkt seiner Filmlaufbahn und er schrieb die Musik zu bekannten Produktionen wie "Kismet" (30), "The Plumber and the Lady" (33), "The Countess of Monte Cristo" (34), "Million Dollar Ransom" (34), "Great Expectations" (34), "Vagabond Lady" (35), "Small Town Girl" (36), "San Francisco" (36), "After the Thin Man" (36), "Saratoga" (37), "A Yank at Oxford" (38), "Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars" (38), "The Chaser" (38), "It's a Wonderful World" (39) und "The Women" (39).

Für den Film "Mannequin" (37) wurde er erstmals für einen Oscar nominiert.

Anerkennungsmässig waren die 40er Jahre erfolgreicher als die 30er Jahre, obwohl er in dieser Zeit weniger Filmkompositionen schrieb als in den Jahren zuvor.
Dazu gehören die Produktionen "Young Tom Edison" (40), "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" (41), "Miss Polly" (41), "Flying with Music" (42), "Phantom of the Opera" (43), "The Climax" (44), "It Happened of Fifth Avenue" (47), "Copacabana" (47) und "The Doctor and the Girl" (49).

In diesem Jahrzehnt wurde er für sechs weitere Oscars nominiert, gewinnen konnte er den Preis jedoch nie.
