The cinematographer Richard Angst was an enthusiastic skier and mountaineer,
and thanks to his passion he came in contact with the film business when
Sepp Allgeier engaged him as an assistant for Dr. Arnold Fanck's mountain
movies.
Richard Angst was mentioned for the first time in the credit list as
a cinematographer for the movie "Milak, der Grönlandjäger" (27).
In the next years he became an equal cinematographer in the team of Arnold
Fanck beside Sepp Allgeier and Hans Schneeberger. To their common works
belong "Der grosse Sprung" (27), "Die weisse Hölle vom Piz Palü"
(29), "Stürme über dem Montblanc" (30), "Der weisse Rausch" (31),
"SOS Eisberg" (33) and "Der ewige Traum/Der König des Montblanc" (34).
His occupation led Richard Angst to different countries in the next
few years, among others he photographed documentaries in Borneo, the Himalayas
and in Japan.
He came back to Germany in 1939 and launched his great career as a
head cinematographer for feature movies. To his well-known movies till
the end of war belong "Die unheimlichen Wünsche" (39), "Die Geierwally"
(40), "Rembrandt" (42), "Der grosse Schatten" (42) and "Ein schöner
Tag" (43).
During the days of the bomb attacks against Germany he went to Austria
where he finished the movie "Ulli und Marei/Der Berghofbauer" (45).
After the war he photographed the American movie "High Conquest" (47),
only in 1950 he realized his first work for the new Federal Republic of
Germany - "Föhn/Sturm in der Ostwand" (50).
In the following years he had a very active creative period and he
photographed several movies with the directors Harald Braun, Franz Josef
Gottlieb and especially Kurt Hoffmann.
To his successful works of the 50's and 60's belong among others "Drei
Männer im Schnee" (55), "Ich denke oft an Piroschka" (55), "Das Wirtshaus
im Spessart" (57), "Wir Wunderkinder" (58), "Der Tiger von Eschnapur" (58),
"Das indische Grabmal" (59), "Via Mala" (61), "Die seltsame Gräfin"
(61), "Der Henker von London" (63), "Heidi" (65) and "Kampf um Rom" (68)
When the German cinema scene driftef off to silly sex movies in the
70's, Richard Angst gave up his job and retired from the film business.
He opened the restaurant "Provinz" in Berlin-Moabit, where he often
worked at the bar and in the kitchen.
Richard Angst wrote his memoirs with the title "47 Jahre objektiv gesehen".
