Hans Behrendt


1889 - 1942

The director, actor and screen writer Hans Behrendt attended a study for literature, afterwards he dedicated to the acting. He was introduced to this metier at the Max-Reinhardt acting school and in 1911 he made his stage debut.

In the next years followed engagements at different theaters before his caree was interruted by his military service in World War I.

After Word War I Hans Behrendt got in touch with the film business and he made his film debut as an actor in 1920 with "Maria Magalene" (20) and "Katharina die Grosse" (20).
For "Katharina die Grosse" (20) he wrote together with Bobby E. Lüthge the screenplay. This duo worked together in the next years for other screenplays.

Hans Behrendt continued his film career as an actor and he took part in "Die Insel der Verschollenen" (21), "Fridericus Rex, 2. Teil: Vater und Sohn" (22), "...und es lockt ein Ruf aus sündiger Welt" (25) and "Der Veilchenfresser" (26).

He also remained regular busy as a screen writer. Among others he wrote she screenplays for "Weltbrand" (20), "Die Insel der Verschollenen" (21), "Fridericus Rex" (22), "Alt Heidelberg" (23), "Ein Sommernachtstraum" (25), "Athleten" (25), "Wallenstein, 2. Teil: Wallensteins Tod" (25), "Die Mühle von Sanssouci" (26), "Potsdam, das Schicksal einer Residenz" (27), "Dyckerpotts Erben" (28), "Die Tänzerin von Sans Souci" (32) and "Muss man sich gleich scheiden lassen" (33).

From 1923 Hans Behrendt also practised to direct movies, his first one was "Alt Heidelberg" (23).
In the next years he directed numerous other movies like "Neuland" (24), "Prinz Louis Ferdinand" (27), "Die Hose" (27), "Dyckerpotts Erben" (28),"Die Flucht vor der Liebe" (29), "Kohlhiesels Töchter" (30), "Danton" (31), "Gloria" (31), "Grün ist die Heide" (32) and "Muss man sich gleich scheiden lassen" (33).

Afterwards his career in Germany ended. Because of his Jewish ancestry he had to leave Germany and he first went to Spain where he directed the movies "Miguelon, o el ultimo contrabandista" (33) and "Dona Francisquita" (34). Finally he decided to go to Austria in 1936. There he continued his career as a stage actor at the Theater in der Josefstadt and he also shot his last movie as a director in Vienna called "Fräulein Lilli" (36).

When Austria became part of the Deutsche Reich in 1938 Hans Behrendt had to emigrate again. His way led him to Belgium but two years later he was arrested by the Belgian police.  Firstly he was placed in different prison camps in France, at the end he was deportet to the KZ Auschwitz in 1942. There he died during his detention, most likely already in 1942.
