The actor and director Josef Berger made an education as a banker but he soon decided to become an actor. He made his stage debut already in 1895. It followed engagement at different theaters where he not only appeared as an actor but he also realised several plays as a director. Josef Berger joined the film business in 1917, first as an actor and from 1921 as a director too. To his first movies as an actor belong "Die goldene Kugel" (17) and "Der Herrgott am Wege" (18). The 20s marked the height of his film career and Josef Berger took part in the productions "Der letzte Schuss" (20), "Der Bagnosträfling" (21), "Die Sünde der Inge Lars" (22), "Der Mann aus Zelle 19" (22), "Um Recht und Liebe" (23), "Der Schuss im Pavillon" (25) and "Sindflut" (27). As a director he realised the movies "Der Bagnosträfling" (21), "Die Rache des Marquis Dokama" (22), "Gehetzte Frauen" (23), "Die Tragödie der Entehrten" (24), "Die Schuld" (24) and "Ein Wiener Musikantenmädel" (28). His appearence in front and behind the camera diminished with the rise of the sound film, instead he concentrated to his stage activity again. To his last cinematical works as an actor belong "Wenn die Abendglocken läuten" (30), "Das unsterbliche Lied" (34), "Meiseken" (37), "Drei wunderschöne Tage" (39), "Der rettende Engel" (40) and "Peterle" (42). As a director he realised the movies "Die Mühle im Schwarzwald" (34) and "In einem kühlen Grunde" (35).
