Sibylla Blei


1897 - 1962

The actress Sibylla Blei was born into an artistic family. Her father was the writer Franz Blei.
 
After completing her school education, she took acting lessons and made her stage debut at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin in 1914. She remained there until 1916.
 
During the First World War, she appeared at the front theater on the Italian front, followed later by appearances in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
 
Afterwards she lived in Vienna where she continued her theater career.
 
She made her film debut with a support role in Ernst Lubitsch's “Madame Dubarry” (19), but her excursion to the film business was only sporadic.
 
So she only took part in two more movies in the next years - “Lucifer” (21) and “Scaramouche” (23).
 
Besides her acting activity she also appeared in different magazines as a model. She was also a model for the famous photographer Grude Fleischmann.
 
In 1926 she married the banker Ernst von Lieben, but the couple separated after a few years. She later lived with her partner Sarah Halpern, who moved to Mallorca in 1932.
 
With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, she fled to Vienna in 1936 and two years later went to Lisbon, where Sarah Halpern was already living.
 
She died at the age of 64 in Costa da Caparica in Portugal.
