. The cinematographer Werner Brandes already made first cinematical experiences by Franz Porten and belongs to the pionieers of the German film. He was already active as a cinematographer before World War I, to his early works belong "Theodor Körner" (12), "Der Film von der Königin Luise" (13), "Die Befreiung der Schweiz und die Sage vom Wilhelm Tell" (13) and "Der Hund von Baskerville" (14). With the outbreak of World War I his activity in the film business came to a stop, only from 1919 he was able to continue his career as a cinematographer again. In the next years he was involved in some huge productions, among them "Die Herrin der Welt "(19), "Das indische Grabmal - Die Sendung des Yaghi" (21), "Das indische Grabmal - Der Tiger von Eschnapur" (21), "Mensch gegen Mensch" (24), "Der Mann im Feuer" (26) and "Moulin Rouge" (28). From 1929 Werner Brandes was also active for the British film. To these works belong "Piccadilly" (29), "The Informer" (29) and "The W Plan" (30). Werner Brandes also belonged to the demanded German film artists during the sound film era of the 30. He shot among others the productions "Der Schuss im Tonfilmatelier" (30), "Der Stumme von Portici_" (31), "Emil und die Detektive" (31), "Strich durch die Rechnung" (32), "G'schichten aus dem Wienerwald" (34), "Die Leuchter des Kaisers" (36) and "Der Herrscher" (37) When World War II broke out he emigrated to Switzerland where he took part in few local movies. To these works belong "Verena Stadler" (40) with Lukas Ammann and Blanche Aubry, "Mir lönd nüd lugg" (40) with Paul Hubschmid and Lisa della Casa, "Bieder der Flieger" (41) with Robert Freitag and Rudolf Bernhard and "Der Kegelkönig" (42) with Fredy Scheim. After the war he could not continue his career as a cinematogrpaher. He only was engaged for two more movies - for the American experimental movie "Dreams That Money Can Buy" (47) directed by Hans Richter and the comedy "Sommerliebe am Bodensee" (57) with Fredy Scheim and Carl M.
