The actor Robert Dorsay was born as Robert Stampa in Bremen, son of the opera singer Paul Stampa.

He begann his career at the theater where he appeared as an actor on numerous stages in Austria and Germany.Beside it he was also a singer and ballet master.
He was especially successful as a comedian who liked to perform political jokes.

He joined the film business in 1936 where he impersonated numerous support roles in the next few years, sometimes in well-known productions.
To his popular movies belong "Flitterwochen" (36), "Zu neuen Ufern" (37), "Die Fledermaus" (37), "Wie einst im Mai" (38), "Kautschuk" (38), "Der Tanz auf dem Vulkan" (38), "Robert und Bertram" (39) and "Familie auf Bestellung" (39).

During World War II he served as a driver for the Wehrmacht. When he got a furlough he visited the German theater where he performed some political jokes.
Because of a hint of a snitcher a joke about Hitler became his doom and he was arrested in 1943. In order to discourage other artists to tease Adolf Hitler or other leading politicians they gave a draconian judgement: Death because of Wehrmacht demoralization". Robert Dorsay was executed in Plötzensee in the same year.

According to Tagesspiegel.de the fatal joke was (this can't be translated without losing the double entendre):
Bei Hitlers Einzug in eine Stadt hält ihm ein Mädchen ein Büschel Gras entgegen. Hitler fragt: „Was soll ich damit?“ Das Mädchen antwortet: „Alle sagen, wenn der Führer ins Gras beißt, kommen bessere Zeiten“.
