The production designer Hans Dreier as not only active in Germany
but also became one of the most important production designers in
Hollywood from 1923.
Before Hans Dreier entered the film
business he finished his study for architecture and engineering and
worked afterwards for the German government. Among others he had a job
in Cameroon.
He got in touch with the film in 1919 where he
could use his education as an architect optimally. To his first movies
belong "Seelenverkäufer" (19), "Der Teufel und die Madonna" (19),
"Lilli" (19), "Nachtgestalten" (20), "Kurfürstendamm" (20), "Manolescus
Memoiren" (20), "Die Fürstin Woronzoff" (20), "Lady Godiva" (21),
"Danton" (21), "Lady Hamilton" (21), "Fridericus Rex" (22) and "Peter
der Grosse" (22)
Despite his huge success he had for the German
film straightaway he went to Hollywood in 1923 where he got a contract
by Paramount. He worked for this production company till 1951 and he
was the production designer for many well-known productions.
To
his American silent movies belong "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (23),
"Wings" (27), "Underworld" (27), "Street of Sin" (28), "The Last
Command" (28), "The Legion of the Condemned" (28) and "The Patriot"
(28).
He became established in the USA in the 30s for good and
Hans Dreier created the coulisses of popular movies like "Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde" (31), "Shanghai Express" (32), "Trouble in Paradise"
(32), "I'm No Angel" (33), "Duck Soup" (33), "The Scarlet Empress"
(34), "Cleopatra" (34), "The Glass Key" (35), "Peter Ibbetson" (35),
"Desire" (36), "The Plainsman" (36), "Wells Fargo" (37), "The
Buccaneer" (38), "Bluebeard's Eight Wife" (38), "Union Pacific" (39),
"Beau Geste" (39) and "The Cat and the Canary" (39).
Thank to a
huge team he presided over - among them Albert S. D'Agostino and Roland
Anderson - Hans Dreier was also able to create the set for an enormous
number of movies of the 40s again, among them "The Farmer's Daughter"
(40), "The Great McGinty" (40), "The Lady Eve" (41), "Sullivan's
Travels" (41), "The Glass Key" (42), "The Palm Beach Story" (42), "For
Whom the Bell Tolls" (43), "Ministry of Fear" (44), "The Lost Weekend"
(45), "The Blue Dahlia" (46), "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" (46),
"The Perils of Pauline" (47), "The Big Clock" (48), "Sorry, Wrong
Number" (48), "The Paleface" (48), "Samson and Delilah" (49) and "The
Great Gatsby" (49).
He only worked for few more movies in the 50s before he retired from the film business in 1951.
To
his last cinematical works belong "Riding High" (50), "Sunset Blvd."
(50), "Union Station" (50) and "A Place in the Sun" (51).
During
his long lasting career in Hollywood Hans Dreier was awarded with three
Oscars for "Frenchmen's Creek" (44), "Samson and Delilah" (49) and
"Sunset Blvd." (50). In addition he was also nominated for an Oscar 20
times.
