The actress Berta Drews began a voice study in Berlin at the beginning
of the 20's before she went to the Max-Reinhardt school in order to seize
the profession of an actress.
She got her first theater engagement at the Landestheater Stuttgart
in 1924, later followed engagement in Munich and Berlin.
She got married with the actor Heinrich
George in 1932 who was one of the most important actors of the 30's
and 40's in Germany.
Berta Drews made her film debut with "Schleppzug M 17" (33), directed
by her husband, in the same year followed the movie "Hitlerjunge Quex"
(33).
But she directed her attention always to the theater, in movies she
only appeared now and then. Till the end of war she took part in movies
like "Der Kaiser von Kalifornien" (36), "Urlaub auf Ehrenwort" (37), "Heimkehr"
(41) and "Der grosse Schatten" (42).
Immediatly after the war her husband Heinrich George was interned in
Sachsenhausen by the Russians where he died in September 1946.
Berta Drews continued her stage career at the Hebbel theater from 1948,
later she belonged to the ensemble of the Schillertheater.
After the war she appeared only sporadically in movies for the time
being like in "Mädchen hinter Gittern" (49), "Lockende Gefahr" (50)
and "Ave Maria" (53), only from the middle of the 50's her activities for
the film increased.
To her well-known movies of the 50's belong "Der Biberpelz" (55), "Anastasia,
die letzte Zarentochter" (56), "Es geschah am hellichten Tag" (58) and
"Das Mädchen vom Moorhof" (58).
In the 60's she also played at her son Götz George's side who became
later one of the most successful actors in Germany. Well-known movies of
the 60's and 70's with Berta Drews are "Das Mädchen und der Staatsanwalt"
(62), "Die chinesische Mauer" (65), "Der Geizige" (69), "Einer von uns
beiden" (73) and especially "Die Blechtrommel" (79) - her last feature
movie.
