. The director and screenwriter Erich Engel started his professional life as a journalist but he soon decided to become an actor. He got acting lessons by Leopold Jessner at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. It followed tours through Germany before he became a dramatic adviser at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg from 1917. Later he also realised some plays as a director at the Hamburger Kammerspielen. He went to Munich in 1922 and two years later to Berlin where he continues his career at the theater. His greatest success as a theater director he had with the play „Die Dreigroschenoper“ (28) at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm. He entered the film business in the middle of the 20s for the first time and he directed the movies „Mysterien eines Frisiersalons“ (23) and „Die Liebe ist der Frauen Macht“ (24). Afterwards it lasted till to the beginning of the 30s till he realised more movies as a director. To these productions belong „Der Mörder Dimitri Karamasoff“ (31), „Fünf von der Jazzband“ (32), „Pechmarie“ (34), „Pygmalion“ (35), „Mädchenjahre einer Königin“ (36), „Die Nacht mit dem Kaiser“ (36), „Der Maulkorb“ (38) and „Hotel Sacher“ (39). In the 40s he realised movies like „Nanette“ (40), „Viel Lärm um Nixi“ (42), „Sommerliebe“ (42), „Altes Herz wird wieder jung“ (43), „Wo ist Herr Belling?“ (45), „Affäre Blum“ (48) and „Der Biberpelz“ (49). His last movies for the big screen came in the 50s into being with „Land der Sehnsucht“ (50), „Unter den tausend Laternen“ (52), „Der Mann meines Lebens“ (54), „Liebe ohne Illusion“ (55) and „Geschwader Fledermaus“ (58).
