.
. The filmcomposer Franz Grothe influenced the German film music during 40 years. He realised his first composition for the movie „Die Nacht gehört uns“ (1929). In the following decades he demonstrated with his work a fullness and versatility which couldn't nearly found by other film composers. He composed the score for 155 movies, among them nearly all movies with Martha Eggerth and later with Marika Rökk. Franz Grothe had a "hereditary handicap" with regard to the music so
to speak. His mother was a soprano, his father a pianist. He took music
lessons in young years and when he knew his trade for violin and piano
he composed for the first time at the age of 10.
The new medium sound film fascinated him in the 30's and he composed the film music for movies like „Tingel Tangel“ (30), „Boykott“ (30), „Walzerkrieg“ (33) and „Das Schloss im Süden“ (33) and with his song „Ich kenn dich nicht und liebe dich“ for the movie of the same name he created his first evergreen in 1934. Franz Grothe's music style caught on from 1938 at the latest and movies like „Immer, wenn ich glücklich bin“ (38) und „Napoleon ist an allem schuld“ (38) established the highly gifted artist. Later on there was hardly a movie composed by Grothe which didn't contain a melody which became a catchy tune. It followed hit by hit for the productions „Ehe in Dosen“ (39), „Alarm auf Station III“ (39), „Der Vorhang fällt“ (39), „Das Abenteuer geht weiter“ (39), „Der Vogelhändler“ (40), „Frauen sind doch bessere Diplomaten“ (41) and „Illusion“ (41). During World War II the German film industry produced many entertainment movies in order to take people's mind off there worries. With „Der Strom“ (42), „Liebespremiere“ (43), „Der ewige Klang“ (43), „Die Frau meiner Träume“ (44) and „Rätsel der Nacht“ (45) the audience was "kidnapped" into an other world by Grothe. He kept in the same way busy after the war and wrote countless scores in the 50's. This decade marked the busiest one in his composer career. Movies like „Vom Teufel gejagt“ (50), „Frauenarzt Dr. Prätorius“ (50), „Fanfaren der Liebe“ (51), „Das Haus in Montevideo“ (51), „Verrat an Deutschland“ (54), „Bildnis einer Unbekannten“ (54) „Ich denke oft an Piroschka“ (55), „Effi Briest“ (55), „Die Trapp-Familie“ (56), „Das Wirtshaus im Spessart“ (57), „Wir Wunderkinder“ (58), „Helden“ (58) and „Ein Mann geht durch die Wand“ (59) were ennobled by his music. Franz Grothe only wrote few film music in the 60's like „Liebling der
Götter“ (60), „Heldinnen“ (60), „Das Haus in Montevideo“ (63), „Hokuspokus
oder: Wie lasse ich meinen Mann verschwinden…?“ (65), „Heidi“ (65) and
„Ein Tag ist schöner als der andere“ (69), after that he retired from
the film business and worked often for television.
