Artur Guttmann

The filmcomposer Artur Guttmann was born into a musical family, his father was a musician himself.
Therefore he got a musical education at a young age and when he was 18 he took over the conduct of the boys' choir of the Volksoper in Vienna.
Three years later he became a bandmaster of the Johann Strauss theater.

He went to Germany after World War I where he was active as a conductor for different theaters and opera houses.

He became established as a filmcomposer from the middle of the 20s and he wrote the music for silent movies like "Wie einst im Mai" (26), "Die Czardasfürstin" (27), "Männer vor der Ehe" (27), "Die tolle Lola" (27), "Der Kampf des Donald Westhof" (27), "Schuldig" (28), "Die Todesschleife" (28) and "Der Mann mit dem Laubfrosch" (29).

He remained a demanded filmcompose in the sound film era of the 30s and Artur Guttmann composed the score for many other movies - often together with other filmcomposers.
To these works belong "Liebe im Ring" (30), "Der Andere" (30), "Drei Tage Mittelarrest" (30), "Der Weg nach Rio" (31), "Danton" (31), "Grock" (31), "Salto Mortale" (31), "Man braucht kein Geld" (32), "Der Hexer" (32), "Scampolo, ein Kind der Strasse" (32), "Alles für die Firma" (35) and "Fräulein Lilli" (36).

Artur Guttmann already left Germany in 1933 because of the National Socialists and he went back to Austria where he was able to continue his career.
But in 1936 he also had to leave his home country and he went to Spain and afterwards to the USA where he got a contract by MGM.
There he first worked as a musical conduct before he composed again the music for few movies.
His first two filmcompositions he wrote in 1937 for the silent movie "The Son of the Sheik" from 1926 and in 1939 for the silent movie "Tumbleweed" from 1925.

Only in the 40s he was able to write the score for actual feature movies again but only rarely. To these works belong "I Take This Woman" (40) and "Enemy of Women" (44).

Artur Guttmann used the pseudonyms Otto Erwin Kulm and Otto Erwin during his career.
