Luli von Hohenberg alias Luli Deste

. The actress Luli von Hohenberg was born as Julie Dorothea von Bodenhausen in Heidelberg. She was born into an aristocratic family, her father was Eberhard von Bodenhausen-Degener who was an art historian and director by Krupp and her mother was Dorothea Elisabeth Eva Marie Countess of Degenfeld-Schonburg. She already got married at the age of 20 with baron Gottfried von Meyern-Hohenberg, the marriage was divorced eight years later. Because Luli von Hohenberg was interested in acting she got acting lessons by the famous Lucie Höflich. When she met Max Reinhardt he engaged her for the Deutsches Theater. It followed engagements on other stages in Germany and Austria. She made her film debut under the pen name Luli Deste in the English production "My Friend the King" (32) directed by Michael Powell. She impersonated the role of countess Zena at the side of Jerry Verno and Robert Holmes. In 1936 she took part in the German produductions "Opernring" (36) and "Silhouetten" (36). She went to the USA in 1937 where she played smaller roles for the productions "Thunder in the City" (37) and "She Married an Artist" (37). She returned to Germany in 1939 and she impersonated the title role in "Verdacht auf Ursula" (39). Shortly afterwards she left Germany again with the outbreak of World War II and she went back to the USA. There she was able to continue her film career for a brief time with "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" (40), "Ski Patrol" (40), "South to Karanga" (40), "The Case of the Black Parrot" (41) and "Outlaws of the Desert" (41). Afterwards she retired from the film business. As an author she published the book "Come, take my hand" in 1949 which was also published in Germany as "Du bist wunderbar…". |
