. The actor Ernst Karchow learnt his acting abilities at the acting school at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. He made his stage debut before World War I but his career became interrupted when he served as a soldier from 1914 to 1918. After World War I he continued his acting career in Frankfurt in 1919, later followed engagements at different theaters in Berlin. From 1935 he also took over the position of a theater director and also became a theater manager. He entered the film business in 1927 with "Gewitter über Gottland" (27), it followed his second and last silent movie "Wir halten fest und treu zusammen" (29). Ernst Karchow was engaged for numerous support roles during the 30s and 40s and he acted together with many great stars of that time. To his well-known movies of the 30s belong "Der Hauptmann von Köpenick" (31), "Gold" (34), "Der alte und der junge König" (35), "Lady Windermeres Fächer" (35), "Mazurka" (35), "Fridericus" (37), "Sherlock Holmes" (37), "Fanny Elssler" (37) and "Der Fall Deruga" (38). He was able to continue his acting career during World War II and he appeared in many movies like "Quax, der Bruchpilot" (41), "Fronttheater" (42), "Der grosse Schatten" (42), "Damals" (43), "Tonelli" (43), "Träumerei" (44) and "Das Leben geht weiter" (45). He did not continue his film career after the war. The movie "Die Nacht der Zwölf" (49) was already shot in 1945 partially and only finished and released in 1949. Besides his activity as an actor he also took over speaking roles in
radio plays.
