. The director and writer Gerhard Lamprecht was interested in the film business at a young age and when he was 17 he was able to sell his first movie script. Two years later he took acting lessons by the famous actor Paul Bildt and he began his artistic career at the theater. He completed his knowledge with a study for art history and dramatics. Finally he entered the film business as a screenwriter in 1918 and in his first years he wrote the screenplays for "Marionetten der Leidenschaft" (19), "Der Seelenverkäufer" (19) und "Der Flimmerprinz" (19). Gerhard Lamprecht was able to realise his first movie as a director in 1920 with "Es bleibt in der Familie" (20). In the next years he shot numerous other silent movies as a director, beside it he continued to write screenplays, often for his own movies. To hiss well-known movies as a director of those years belong "Aus den Erinnerungen eines Frauenarztes" (22), "Die Buddenbrooks" (24), "Die Verrufenen" (25), "Menschen untereinander" (26), "Der Katzensteg" (27), "Der alte Fritz" (28) and "Der Mann mit dem Laubfrosch" (29). Gerhard Lamprecht directed again many movies in the sound film era of the 30s and 40s, among them also the classic "Emil und die Detektive" (31). The movie "Emil und die Detektive" shows the later effect of World War II within the population. Several actors of those movie did not survive the war. Rolf Wenkhaus, child actor of "Emil", died in 1942 at the age of 24 at the front of Ireland, Hans-Joachim Schaufuss, child actor of "Gustav mit der Hupe", died in 1941 at the age of 22 Jahren at the front of Russia and Hans Löhr, child actor of "Dienstag", died in 1942 at the age of 20. Other popular movies of Gerhard Lamprecht of those years are "Zwischen Nacht und Morgen" (31), "Der schwarze Husar" (32), "Ein gewisser Herr Gran" (33), "Barcarole" (35), "Der höhere Befehl" (35), "Madame Bovary" (37), "Frau im Strom" (39), "Diesel" (42), "Irgendwo in Berlin" (46) and "Quartett zu fünft" (49). His last movies as a director came in the 50s into being with "Meines Vaters Pferde" (54), "Der Engel mit dem Flammenschwert" (54), "Oberwachtmeister Borck" (55) and "Menschen im Werk" (58). Besides his activity in the film business Gerhard Lamprecht was also busy as a movie historian after his active career. To his well-known publications belong a lexicon of volumes called "Gesamtregister Deutsche Stummfilme aus den Jahren 1903 bis 1931". His extensive collection about the German film history led to the foundation of the "Deutsche Kinemathek" in 1962. He was the head of this institution till 1966.
