. The production designer Karl Machus first finished an education as a painter before he dedicated to the theater where he created the coulisses for numerous plays. Finally he entered the film business and at the beginning of his career he was suported by the production designer Kurt Richter. His first movies as a production designer came into being together with Kurt Richter, afterwards he became an independant production designer as well. To his first movies belong "Carmen" (18), "Prinz Kuckuck" (19) and "Madame DuBarry" (19). The breakthrough followed in the 20s and Karl Machus was responsible for many popular productions. To these movies belong "Schneider Wibbel" (20), "Berlin W." (20), "Die rote Hexe" (21), "Der Roman eines Dienstmädchens" (21), "Othello" (22), "Nathan der Weise" (22), "Zwei Kinder" (24), "Reveille, das grosse Wecken" (25), "Das edle Blut" (27), "U 9 Weddigen" (27), "Orientexpress" (27), "Eva in Seide" (28), "Lemkes sel. Witwe" (28) and "Kinder der Strasse" (29). He continuted his film career successfully in the sound film era of the 30s. To his well-known movies of those years belong "Johann Strauss, k.u.k. Hofkapellmeister" (32), "Reifende Jugend" (33), "Ich heirate meine Frau" (34), "August der Starke" (36), "Arzt aus Leidenschaft" (36), "Moral" (36), "Der Katzensteg" (38) and "Robert und Bertram" (39). During World War II he created the decoration for some huge productions, often together with Erich Zander. To these works belong "Bismarck" (40), "Der grosse König" (42), "Die goldene Stadt" (42), "Opfergang" (44) and "Kolberg" (45). Kart Machus was not able to see the finished result of his last cinematical work. The movie "Kolberg" was only released after his death. Other
