Elfie Mayerhofer

The actress Elfie Mayerhofer became well-known as a singer and got the nickname "Wiener Nachtigall - Viennese nightingale".

She was born in Marburg and she studied music. She made her stage debut in Munich, later she went to Zurich and Vienna.
Afterwards followed engagements at different theaters in Berlin.

Elfie Mayerhofer made her film debut in 1938 with "Frauen für Golden Hill". In the next years followed musical movies in which she the audience bewitched. To her movies till the end of war belong "Hotel Sacher" (39), "Wir bitten zum Tanz" (41), "Meine Frau Teresa" (42) and "Das kleine Hofkonzert" (45).

She continued her career after the war and was giving concerts and appeared at operas.
She was engaged by Herbert von Karajan for the Salzburger Musikfestspiele in 1949 where she acted at Maria Cebotari's side in the play "The Marriage of Figaro".

To her post-war movies belong "Wiener Melodien" (47), "Anni" (48), "Geliebter Lügner" (50), "Abschiedsvorstellung" (55) and "Die Landstreicher" (68).
She went overseas in the 70's where she appeared in operas and operettas in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
