The production designer Jacques Rotmil - who also used the name
Jacek Rotmil in Poland - was born in St. Petersburg. He finished an
education as architect and engineer. He worked as an interior designer
for a brief time before he entered the film business in 1919. There he
could use his knowledge perfect.
After his first movie "Der
Bastard" (19) he was the art director of many movies of the 20s who
belonged to very different genres.
To these movies belong "Im
Banne der Kralle" (21), "Der lebende Propeller" (21), "Monna Vanna"
(22), "Fräulein Raffke" (23), "Luxusweibchen" (25), "Niniche" (25),
"Die vom Niederrhein" (25), "Die Gesunkenen" (26), "Die keusche
Susanne" (26), "Die tolle Lola" (27), "Der Orlow" (27), "Die
Leibeigenen" (28), "S.O.S. Schiff in Not" (29) and "Der Sträfling aus
Stambul" (29).
He was able to continue his film career in Germany at the beginning of the 30s till to the takeover of the National Socialists.
In
those years he was engaged for the productions "Dolly macht Karriere"
(30), "Das alte Lied" (30), "Die Försterchristl" (31), "Der
Draufgänger" (31), "Das Abenteuer der Thea Roland" (32) and "Es war
einmal ein Walzer" (32).
As a Jew he had to fled from Germany in
1933 and he went to Warsaw where he was able to continue his film
career because he already worked for first Polish movies from 1930.
To
his movis in Poland belong "Zabawka" (33), "Czarna perla" (34),
"Rapsodia Baltyku" (35), "Dwie Joasie" (35), "Roza" (36), "Pan
Twardowski" (36), "Papa sie zeni" (36), "Bolek i Lolek" (36), "Robert i

(38), "Mamele" (38), "Doktor Murek" (39) and "Zolnierz krolowej
Madagaskaru" (40).
When Germany invaded Poland he was caught up
with that political horror he fled from Germany some years ago. He went
into hiding and joined the underground. Later he was picked up and put
in prisonin Warsaw. There he was executed on July 26, 1944.
