Josef Rovensky

. The actor Josef Rovensky was especially well-known as an actor in his home country Tschechoslovakia. Since 1928 he also appeared in few German productions from time to time. He as born into a wealthy family and was able to take acting lessons before he made his stage debut in 1914. In the next years he got engagements at bigger theaters like the Stadttheater in Pilsen and beside it he appeared at cabarets and smallter theaters as well. He joined the film business in 1914 and at the beginning of his career he played roles in the movies "Zamilovana tchyne" (14), "Oklamany hypnotisér Swengali" (19) and "Akord smrti" (19). He got numerous engagements in Czech silent movies, among them "Cervena karkulka" (22), "Drvostep" (23), "Svejk na fronte" (26), "Pantata Bezousek" (27), "Sextanka" (28), "Pohorska vesnice" (28) and "Pater Vojtech" (29). During this time he also took part in first German productions, often directed by Karel Lamac. To these works belong "Der erste Kuss" (28), "Der Monte Christo von Prag" (29), "Der Ruf des Nordens" (29) and "Tagebuch einer Verlorenen" (29). Josef Rovensky continues his film career in the sound film era of the 30s successfully and the acted again in many movies. Besides few more German movies like "Das Mädel aus U.S.A." (30), "Ein Mädel von der Reeperbahn" (30), "Wehe, wenn er losgelassen" (32) and "Die Tochter des Regiments" (33) he played again in a lot of Czech productions. To his last cinematical works belong "Stary hrich" (30), "Tonka Sibenice" (30), "Dobry vojak Svejk" (31), "Loupeznik" (31), "Lelicek ve sluzbach Sherlocka Holmese" (32), "Ruzové kombiné" (32), "Diagnosa X" (33), "Reka" (33), "Za rannich cervanku" (34) and "Trhani" (36). Besides his activity as an actor Josef Rovensky also wrote some screenplays and he also directed several movies. To his movies as a director belong "Komediantka" (20), "Tulakovo srdce" (22), "Reka" (33), "Marysa" (35) and "Manja Walewska" (36) Josef Rovensky died in 1937 at the of only 43 after a short illness.
