The actor Szöke Szakall was born as Jenö Geré in Budapest.
Already in his school time he wrote first Sketches and published it
with the pseudonym Szöke Szakall (= blond beard).
He served on the East front line during World War I, after that he launched
his career as an actor and comedian at different theaters. He became soon
well-known abroad because of his successes and he first went to Vienna,
afterwards to Berlin where he was equally successful as writer and comedian.
He came to the film through Paul Davidson. He was engaged as a writer
for Reinhold Schünzel's movies, but he
soon convinced as a comedian on the screen and began his impressive career.
To the well-known silent movies of Szöke Szakall belong "Der Himmel
auf Erden" (27), "Mary Lou" (28), "Rutschbahn" (28) and "Wer wird denn
weinen, wenn man auseinandergeht" (29).
But only with the transition to the sound film he was able to show his
funny talent to advantage. He acted successfully in the movies "Zwei Herzen
im 3/4 Takt" (30), "Kopfüber ins Glück" (30), "Ich heirate meinen
Mann" (31), "Der Zinker" (31), "Gräfin Mariza" (32), "Eine Frau wie
Du" (33) and "Fräulein Lilli" (36).
When Joe Pasternak engaged Szöke Szakall to Hollywood for his movie
"It's a Gift", he made use of the opportunity to leave the uncomfortable
Europe. He soon gained a foothold in the USA and worked under the name
S. Z. Sakall first for Universal, from 1941 for Warner Bros. which offered
him appreciative supporting roles as a funny and good-natured fat person.
To the well-known movies of the 40's belong "The Devil and Miss Jones"
(41), "Ball of Fire - Die merkwürdige Zähmung der Gangsterbraut
Sugarpuss" (41), "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (42), "Casablanca (42), "Never Say
Goodbye" (46), "Cynthia" (47) and "It's a Great Feeling - Judy erobert
Hollywood (49).
He was still successful on the screen in the 50's with movies like "Montana"
(50), "Sugarfoot" (51), "It's a Big Country" (51) and "Small Town Girl"
(53).
