. The actor Richard Barthelmess came in touch with the theater at a very young age because his mother was also an actress. Therefore Richard Barthelmess made his first experiences at the theater too. After afirst cinematical work for "Gloria's Romance" (16) he was engaged by the actress and friend of her mother Alla Nazimova for a role in the movie "War Brides" (16). From now he dedicate to the film business. Richard Barthelmess took part in movies like "Snow White" (16), "The Moral Code" (17), "The Eternal Sin" (17), "The Streets of Illusion" (17), "Camille" (17), "The Seven Swans" (17), "Rich Man, Poor Man" (18) and "Wild Primrose" (18) in the next years. In1919 he was signed on by D.W. Griffith and he got the leading role in "Broken Blossoms" (19) at Lillian Gish's side - the movie is regarded as a classic today. With this role he finally became a star. In the 20's he was convincing with movies like "Way Down East" (20), "Tol'able David" (21), "Fury" (23), "Classmates" (24), "The White Black Sheep" (26), "The Patent Leader Kid" (27) and "The Noose" (28). For the two last-mentioned movies he was nominated for the Oscar. But with the rise of the talkies came the end of his career into view.
It is true that he was able to appear in some great movies at the beginning
of the 30's but his roles became constantly smaller.
In 1942 he volunteered forthe army and served in World War II. After the end of the war he retired in Long Island, New York. Richard Barthelmess was one of 36 foundation members of the Academy
of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). In 1921 he also founded his
own production company "Inspiration Film Company".
