Beim Film begann er von der Pike an das Handwerk zu erlernen, zunächst als Laufbursche und als Statist.

In den 20er Jahren entstanden seine erfolgreichsten Filme als Regisseur, wo er mit vielen Stars seiner Zeit zusammenarbeitete und für viele grosse Produktionsgesellschaften wie MGM oder Warner Brothers tätig war.

Das Aufkommen des Tonfilms bereitete ihm keine Schwierigkeiten und er konnte anfangs der 30er Jahre nochmals an seine vergangenen Erfolge anknüpfen.
Er drehte u.a. die Filme "Road to Paradise" (30), "Father's Son" (31), "The Lady Who Dared" (31), "Penrod and Sam" (31), "The Crime of the Century" (33) und "The Old Fashioned Way" (34).

1935 ging er nach England, wo er ebenfalls einige Filme drehte wie "Dandy Dick" (35), "Boys Will Be Boys" (35) und "Feather Your Nest" (37).

Als er einige Jahre später wieder in die USA zurückkehrte, musste er realisieren, dass er in der Hierarchie Hollywoods weit nach unten gerutscht war und es fiel ihm schwer, in der Anfangszeit Arbeit zu finden.

In den kommenden Jahren konnte er wieder eine Vielzahl an Filmen drehen, meistens handelte es sich aber um Low-Budget-Filme.
