The actress Bebe Daniels was already on the way with a touring company
for the play "Richard III" at the of four and got first leading roles at
the age of seven.
Bebe Daniels made her film debut ca 1909, the titles of the movies can
no longer be proved definitely today. Her earliest ascertainable movie
was "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (10), which followed the movie "The Common
Enemy" (10).
From 1915 she became a leading actress in a huge amount of film comedies
of the figure Lonesome Luke, impersonated by star comedian Harold
Lloyd. To their common movies belong among others "Lonesome Luke, Social
Gangster" (15), "Lonesome Luke, Circus King" (16), "Luke's Double" (16),
"Luke and the Mermaids" (16), "Luke's Lost Liberty" (17) and "Luke's Trolley
Troubles" (17).
She took part in more than 200 short movies at Hal
Roach studios with Harold Lloyd and Snub Pollard.
When Harold Lloyd gave up the figure of Lonesome Luke and found his
real figure with horn-rimmed spectacles and straw hat, Bebe Daniels continued
tooking part in his movies till 1919.
Bebe Daniels went to Paramount in 1919 where she appeared in Cecil
B. DeMille's movie "Male and Female" (19). In the following years she
worked successful for Paramoount and acted in well-known movies like "Everywoman"
(19), "The Fourteenth Man" (20), "One Wild Week" (21), "The Affairs of
Anatol" (21), "The Speed Girl" (21) - a kind of a autobiographic movie
about the experiences of Bebe Daniels when she was sentenced to ten days
in prison because of excessive speed in reality - "North of the Rio Grande"
(22), "The Exciters" (23) and with the legendary Rudolph Valentino in "Monsieur
Beaucaire" (24).
To her last silent movies belong "Sinners in Heaven" (24), "Miss Bluebeard"
(25), "Miss Brewster's Millions" (26), "Volcano" (26), "She's a Sheik"
(27) and "Take Me Home" (28).
When the sound film arose, Paramount wasn't sure if their former crowd-puller
also was suitable for the talkies. Bebe Daniels payed to be free from the
contract without further ado and went RKO studios where she took successfully
part in the sound film "Rio Rita" (29). Other successes were "Reaching
for the Moon" (30), "The Maltese Falcon" (31), "42nd Street" (33) and "Counsellor
at Law" (33).
After that it became a little bit quiet about Bebe Daniels. Only few
movies followed, so "Treachery on the High Seas" (36), "The Return of Carol
Deane" (38), "Hi Gang!" (41) and her last movie "Life with the Lyons" (54).
Bebe Daniels toured with her husband and actor Ben Lyon in England in
1936. The tour was so successful that they continued the tour in 1939 and
took up residence in London.
An anecdote from her life:
When Bebe Daniels checked in at the Chicago Hotel in order to give
a personal performance, someone has stolen jewellery from her room worth
several thousand dollars. Al Capone, a great fan of her, heard of it and
gave to understand that whoever has stolen the jewellery has to bring back
it within 24 hours or... On the next the jewellery emerged again.
