.
. The
actor Reginald Denny was born as Reginald Leigh Dugmore. He
inherited the acting by his father who was the actor and singer
W. H. Denny.
Therefore Reginald Denny came in
contact with the stage at an early age when he acted on stage
when he was six years old.
But at first acting was a hobby for
him. This changed when he finished shool and went to the USA in
1908.
There he took part in the play "The
Quaker Girl" and he joined a theater troupe who toured
through the USA, India and Far East.
Reginald Denny already appeared in
first British silent movies in 1912 but only from 1915 - when he
returned to the USA - he was able to launch his impressive film
career.
The number of movies in the first
years remained low, among others he appeared in "Niobe"
(15), "The Melting Pot" (15) and "The Red Lantern"
(19).
During World War I he served for
the Royal Flying Corps as a pilot. There he not only gained
experience in flying but also became the box champion of the
brigade.
After the war he returned to the
film business and Reginald Denny soon became a demanded actor in
popular movies. To his well-known movies of those years belong
"The Price of Posession" (21), "Disraeli"
(21), "The Iron Trail" (22), "Sherlock Holmes"
(22), "The Jaws of Steel" (22), "When Kane Met
Abel" (23), "The Wandering Two" (23), "The
Reckless Age" (24), "What Happened to Jones" (26),
"Fast and Furious" (27), "The Night Bird"
(28) and "Clear the Decks" (29).
The transition to the sound film
was no problem for him and he took part in numerous other movies.
To these movies belong "Madam
Satan" (30), "Hamlet" (33), "The Barbarian"
(33), "Of Human Bondage" (34), "Anna Karenina"
(35), "The Lady in Scarlet" (35), "Romeo and
Juliet" (36), "Bulldog Drummond Escapes" (37),
"Blockade" (38) and "Everybody's Baby" (39).
In 1940 he played in Alfred
Hitchcock's movie "Rebecca" (40). Other movies followed
with "Seven Sinners" (40), "Sherlock Holmes and
the Voice of Terror" (42), "Love Letters" (45),
"Tangier" (46), "The Macomber Affair" (47),
"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (47) and "Escape
Me Never" (47).
Television became a more important
factor in his career from the 50s, still he continued to act in
well-known feature movies.
To Reginald Denny's last
cinematical works belong "The Iroquois Trail" (50),
"Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"
(53), "Escape to Burma" (55), "Around the World in
Eighty Days" (56), an episode of the serial "Climax!:
The Hanging Judge" (56), "The Phantom" (61), "Cat
Ballou" (65) and "Batman" (66).
Besides the acting he developed
another ferventness - building of model aircrafts - a passion
which came from World War I.
Finally he even created a drone and
one of his model brought him an assignment with the US Army who
ordered 15'000 of his radio-controlled target drone (the RP-5A).
Furthermore he founded a shop for model airplanes in 1915
successfully.
Reginald Denny was married with the actresses Irene
Haisman and Betsy Lee verheiratet. His brother Malcolm Denny was
also an actor.
