The actor George Fawcett belonged to the most busy actors of the silent
movie era whose appearance tied the audience. He already belonged to the
great theater actors at the turn of the century (he made his stage debut
in 1888) in England and the USA and was standing on the same level as the
Barrymore Brothers.
To his appearances on stage belong among others "Ghosts" (03) and "The
Squaw Man" (05).
Although he was already 55 years old he was spotted for the film where
he soon became a demanded actor of the director D.W. Griffith. Under his
direction he took part in "Intolerance" (16), "A Romance of Happy Valley"
(19), "True Heart Susie" (19), "Scarlet Days" (19), "The Greatest Question"
(19) and "Lady of the Pavements" (29).
Beside it he also appeared in numerous other silent movies, among them
"The Majesty of the Law" (15), "The Crisis" (16), "The Cinderella Man"
(17), "The Beloved Traitor" (18) and "The Fall of Babylon" (19).
His most successful time followed in the 20's and as the great old man
of film he conquered the public.
To his countless appearances of those years belong the productions
"Nobody" (21), "Hush Money" (21), "The Old Homestead" (22), "Manslaughter"
(22), "The Woman with Four Faces" (23), "The Breaking Point" (24), "Her
Love Story" (24), "The Verdict" (25), "The Waiter from the Ritz" (26),
"Out of the Storm" (26), "The Son of the Sheik" (26), "Flesh and the Devil"
(26) with the legendary film pair Greta Garbo and John Gilbert, "Tillie
the Toiler" (27), "Love" (27) - again with Garbo and Gilbert, "The Private
Life of Helen of Troy" (27), "Tempest" (28), "The Wedding March" (28) directed
by Erich von Stroheim, "Innocents of Paris" (29) and "The Great Divide"
(29).
With the rise of the sound film era he retired from the film business
because of sanitary reasons. To his last cinematical works belong "Wild
Company" (30), "The Drums of Jeopardy" (31) and "Hello, Sister" (33).
