Die Schauspielerin Ethel Grandin begann ihre Laufbahn beim Theater
mit dem Stück "Rip Van Winkle" an der Seite von Joseph Jefferson.
Bereits 1912 heiratete sie den Regisseur Ray C. Smallwood, ein Jahr
später wurde ihr gemeinsamer Sohn geboren.
Der bekannte Regisseur Thomas H. Ince entdeckte Ethel Grandin für
den Film und besetzte sie in "The Toss of a Coin" (11), wo sie aufgrund
ihrer Ähnlichkeit mit Mary Pickford deren Schwester spielte. Sie fasste
schnell Fuss beim Film und avancierte zu einem der ersten Filmstars der
USA.
Zu ihren ersten Filmen gehören "Dorothy's Family" (11), "The Aggressor"
(11), "The Kid and the Sleuth" (12), "A Tenderfoot's Revenge" (12), "The
Crisis" (12), "His Message" (12), "The Desert" (12) und "The Vengeance
of Fate" (12).
Als Star etabliert verkörperte sie weitere Rollen in Produktionen
von Ince und anschliessend Carl Laemmle, ehe sie mit ihrem Ehemann 1914
eine eigene Filmgesellschaft gründete. Die "Smallwood Film Corporation"
wurde bereits im Folgejahr wieder aufgelöst.
Zu ihren weiteren Filmen der kommenden Jahre gehören "When Lincoln
Paid" (13), "A Frontier Wife" (13), "The Spell" (13), "Traffic in Souls"
(13), "Jane Eyre" (14), "Forgetting" (14), "Beneath the Mask" (14), "The
Adopted Daughter" (14), "The Verdict" (15), "In Her Daddy's Footsteps"
(15), "The Spider" (15) und "The Mysterious Visitor" (15).
Danach reduzierte sie ihre Engagements vor der Kamera deutlich und widmete
sich vermehrt ihrer Familie.
Bis zu ihrem Rückzug aus dem Filmgeschäft 1922 folgten sporadische
Auftritte in Produktionen wie "The Crimson Stain Mystery" (16), "The Little
Rebel's Sacrifice" (17), "Garments of Truth" (21) und "A Tailor-Made Man"
(22).
