Die Schauspielerin Bessie Learn verlor schon früh ihre Mutter
und ihr Vater zog seine drei Töchter alleine auf.
Bereits als Kind konnte Bessie Learn ein erstes Engagement am Theater
wahrnehmen im Stück "Hearts Are Trumps".
Sie etablierte sich beim Theater und agierte in zahlreichen weiteren
Aufführungen, darunter "The Little Princess", "Home Folks", "Midsummer
Night's Dream" und "Polly of the Circus".
1911 wurde sie von der Edison company unter Vertrag genommen und sie
konnte daraufhin eine erfolgreiche Filmkarriere starten, wo sie in zahlreichen
Kurzfilmen der 10er Jahre agierte.
Zu ihren ersten Filmen gehörten "Santa Claus and the Clubman" (11),
"For the Cause of the South" (12), "The Mine on the Yukon" (12), "The Father"
(12), "A Dangerous Lesson" (12) und "A Queen for a Day" (12).
Bereits 1913 gehörte sie zu den populärsten Filmstars ihrer
Zeit, doch ihre Zeit beim Film dauerte nur noch wenige Jahre, da ihr Ehemann,
den sie 1913 heiratete, nicht begeistert davon war, dass seine Frau als
Schauspielerin auftrat.
Bevor sie jedoch zurücktrat, agierte sie nochmals in einer grossen
Zahl von Filmen, darunter "The Maid of Honor" (13), "Confidence" (13),
"Old Jim" (13), "Slander's Tongue" (13), "The Phantom Signal" (13), "With
the Eyes of Love" (14), "Shorty" (14), "The Temple of Moloch" (14), "An
Unpaid Ransom" (15), "An Innocent Thief" (15), "A Spring of Shamrock" (15)
und "The Lone Game" (15).
1914 war sie nicht nur als Schauspielerin sondern auch als Drehbuchautorin
und Regisseurin verantwortlich für die Produktion "Her Grandmother's
Wedding Dress" (14).
Im hohen Alter von 98 Jahren verstarb Bessie Learn 1987.
