The actress Mary MacLaren was born as Mary MacDonald in Pittsburgh.

She already made her stage debut at the age of 18 besides the legendary Al Jolson for the plays "The Passing Show of 1914" and "Dancing Around", both at the Wintergarten in New York City.

It did not last long till the film business became aware of this athletic actress as well. In 1916 she made her screen debut with movies like "Saving the Family Name" (16), "Idle Wives" (16), "Shoes" (16) and "Wanted A Home" (16).

In the next years she appeared in movies like "Money Madness" (17), "Bread" (18), "Secret Marriage" (19), "The Unpainted Woman" (19) and "Bonnie Bonnie Lassie" (19).

She continued her cinematical work at the beginning of the 20s with "Rouge and Riches" (20), "The Wild Goose" (21), "The Three Musketeers" (21) with Douglas Fairbanks, "The Face in the Fog" (22), "The Uninvited Guest" (24) and "The Dark Swan" (24).

Afterwards she retired from the film business for several years and only returned in the 30s.

From now on she was normally engaged for very small roles in partly well-known movies.
To her most popular movies of the 30s belong "The Mystery Train" (31), "Her Bodyguard" (33), "The House of Rothschild" (34), "Charlie Chan's Courage" (34), "Cleopatra" (34), "Evelyn Prentice" (34), "Les Misérables" (35), "Age of Indiscretion" (35), "Bonnie Scotland" (35), "Little Lord Fauntleroy" (36), "Reunion" (36), "Sea Devils" (37), "Young Dr. Kildare" (38), "Union Pacific" (39) and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (39).

She also remained limited to small roles in the next decade, to these productions belong "The Green Archer" (40), "Blossoms in the Dust" (41), "Stagecoach Express" (42), "Lady in the Dark" (44), "Kitty" (45) and "My Own True Love" (49).

Afterwards Mary MacLaren retired from the filmbusiness and travelled around with her husband.
Finally she fell into oblivion and financial problems led to a huge poverty and she lived under abject circumstances. Only when a reporter made public her destiny in his newspaper one remained her again and afterwards she was invited as a guest to silent movie festivals and reproductions of the old movies.

Her sister was the also well-known actress Katherine MacDonald.
