The actor Philip Merivale was an established stage actor when he entered the film business.
His first movie was the silent film "Trilby" (14) but for the time being the theater remained his main focus. Therefore he only took part in one more silent movie in the next years called "Whispering Shadows" (21).

He continued to appear sporadically in front of the camera during the 30s and he acted in "I Loved You Wednesday" (33) and "Give Us This Nights" (36).

The 40s marked the height of his film career.
To his movies of those years belong Alfred Hitchcock's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" (41) with Robert Montgomery and Carole Lombard, "Pacific Blackout" (41), "Lady for a Night" (42) with John Wayne, "Crossroads" (42) with William Powell and Hedy Lamarr, "Lost Angel" (43), "The Hour Before the Dawn" (44) with Veronika Lake and Franchot Tone und Orson Welles's "The Stranger" (46) with Edward G. Robinson, Loretta Young and Orson Welles.

But his most popular role was the one of Prince Saul in the movie "Nothing But Trouble" (44) where he tried to kill the legendary comic duo Laurel & Hardy.

Philip Merivale was married with the actresses Viva Birkett and Gladys Cooper.
