The actor Torben Meyer was a very busy support actor whose career comprises
more than 50 years.
He began his professional career as a stage actor in Denmark.
There he also appeared in his first silent movies like "Et hjerte af
guld" (12), "Atlantis" (13), "Privatdetektivens offer" (13), "Held I uheld"
(15), "En nydelig onkel" (16) and "Bajadser" (19).
In the 20's he took part in the movies "Der var engang" (22), "Lille
Dorrit" (24) and finally "Don Quixote" (26), which became an international
success.
He went to the USA one year later and he made his U.S. film debut with
"The Man Who Laughs" (28) at Conrad Veidt's side.
Although the sound film was already coming up at this time and he had
a heavy accent he was able to continue his career in the USA. He was often
engaged for smaller roles and he normally impersonated German characters,
waiters or butlers.
The 30's were full of appearances in well-known movies and he acted
together with many stars of those years.
To his well-known movies of those years belong "Just a Gigolo" (31),
"Murders in the Rue Morgue" (32), "Roberta" (35), "Bride of Frankenstein"
(35), "Charlie Chan in Shanghai" (35), "Espionage" (37), "The Prisoner
of Zenda" (37), "Madame X" (37), "Tovarich" (37), "The Great Waltz" (38)
and "Island of Lost Men" (39).
He took part again in numerous popular movies in the 40's, among them
"Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet" (40), "The Great Dictator" (40) directed by
Charles Chaplin, "Sullivan's Travels" (41), "Berlin Correspondent" (42),
the classic "Casablanca" (42), "The Palm Beach Story" (42), "The Miracle
of Morgan's Creek" (44), "Hotel Berlin" (45), "The Kid from Brooklyn" (46),
"Song of Love" (47), "Letter from an Unknown Woman" (48) and "And Baby
Makes Three" (49). In those years he often appeared in movies directed
by John Sturges who engaged him for nearly all of his movies.
He appeared regularly in front of the camera in the next years but the
number of movies diminished slowly. Torben Meyer impersonated roles in
"The Great Rupert" (50), "My Favorite Spy" (51), "Call Me Madam" (53),
"Houdini" (53), "We're No Angels" (55), "The Helen Morgan Story" (57) and
"The Fly" (59).
His last cinematical works came in the 60's into being - besides few
feature movies especially for television. To these movies belong "G.I.
Blues" (60), "Judgment at Nuremberg" (61) - where he impersonated one of
his most impressive roles as Werner Lampe, a former Nazi judge - and an
episode of the serial "I Dream of Jeannie: Jeannie Breaks the Bank" (66).
